One of my favorite features of Schoology is the ability to integrate Google Apps directly inside of your Schoology account. In this video we're going to go ahead and take a look at how you can connect your Google Apps account. So that you can access your Google Drive directly inside of Schoology, as well as synch up your Google calendar with your Schoology calendar. Let's go get started by enabling Google inside a Schoology. To do this I'm going to click on the dropdown tab in the upper right hand section and I'm going to choose Account Settings. From our Account Settings tab, let's go ahead and scroll down to Connect Your Other Accounts.
Here I can connect Facebook, Twitter, and Google to my Schoology account. I'm going to go ahead and click the Connect button next to Google. If you're already logged in to Google, Schoology will find your Google log in and automatically import your username and passwords. I can tell that I'm logged in to the correct account, because in the upper right hand corner I see firstname.lastname@example.org, which is my Google Apps account. At this time, let's go ahead and click Grant Access. I've now connected my Google Apps account with Schoology. I can see that I'm connected as Aaron Quickly and if I wanted to, I could quickly import all of my contacts from Gmail.
This is a great thing if you're just getting started with Schoology, and you've already used Google Apps with other educators. You can find those educators and bring their contact information directly over. Let's scroll back up to the top and start using Google Apps inside of Schoology. To do this, I'm going to go to my Courses tab, and I'm going to select the life science course we've created. Now there's two things I'd like to do that are going to integrate Google with this course. One, is I'd like to make the syllabus available to students. Two, let's say this past weekend I typed up some paper instructions in a Google doc, I'd like to give those instructions to students, and create an assignment at the same time.
Let's go ahead and take care of linking the syllabus. To do this, I'm going to click on Add Materials. I'm going to come all the way down to import from resources. In the resources box, I'm going to select Google Docs on the left hand navigation. And here I've got the Google Docs that are inside of my Google Drive, one of which is the syllabus that I'd like to make available for students. I'll select the syllabus, I'll click Import. I'll confirm that import. And now under Files and Links I have one item available. So as students log in to Schoology, they can click on File and Links, and they'll be able to see as well as download the school syllabus.
Lets go ahead and click back on the Materials tab on the left hand side, and lets create an assignment that's going to use instructions that you've typed up into a Google Doc. To do this I'm going to go to Assignments. I'm going to click on Add Assignment on the far right hand side. We'll call this assignment Research Paper. Instead of typing up a long description, what I'd like to do is link to the instructions or even link to a rubric. I'm going to come down to the Resources tab at the bottom of the description box Click on it, and here I'm going to go ahead and go back to Google Docs, and this time I'll select the Assignment Instructions.
I'll click Attach, and now those assignment instructions are built directly into this assignment. I'm also going to go ahead and set a due date for this. Let's make this due the 27th. Now by default it's going to select midnight as the due date. I'm going to go ahead and change this and make this due at. Oh, let's say 8 pm or 7:59 pm. I can also add grading options. I've already created a category called Papers. So, I'll select that papers and I'll leave a grading as numeric. Under the advanced option section, I want to make sure that Dropbox is enabled. This is going to create a section inside of Schoology, that my students can upload their final paper to.
As the educator, I can then go to that drop box to quickly grade those papers. I'm going to go and click the Create button. So there we have a research paper we created. We use instructions straight from our Google Drive account, and we're now able to make this available to students. When you create an assignment like this, two things happen besides the creation of the assignment. One is a great book entry is created and the second thing is its added to our calendars. Lets go and talk about how we can sync up our Schoology calendar with our Google calendar. I'm going to access my calendar by clicking on the Schoology icon to take you to back to my instructor homepage.
From here, I'll click on the Calendar tab on the left hand side. Inside of Schoology, you can see I have a few things on the calendar for August. One is a life science exploration day. And the other is the research paper we just created. What I'd like to do is learn how I can take this calendar and build it directly into my Google calendar. The first thing I need to do is make sure that my calendar sharing is enabled. To do that, I'm going to go back up to my account settings navigation. And I'm going to choose Account Settings. Under the account settings tab I'm going to scroll down just past where I connected the Google account. Here I can choose to share, my Schoology calendar.
I'm going to go ahead an make sure it's enabled. An with it enabled it's going to go ahead an give me a link. This link I can then use to paste into either iCal on a Mac, or Outlook in either Mac or a PC, an I can also import this calendar right into Google. I'm going to go ahead and copy this entire calendar link. I'll use the keyboard shortcut of Cmd+C or Ctrl+C on the PC. And then I'm going to come over to Google. Here I have Google Calendars already opened up in my other tab. To add a calendar on the other calendar section on the left hand side, I'm going to select the drop-down menu, and I'm going to choose to Add by URL.
Here I'm simply going to paste in the link that Schoology created for me. I'll use the keyboard shortcut of Cmd+V or Ctrl+V on the PC and I'll go and click Add Calendar. You can now see that there are several things showing up underneath the 26th, 27th and 28th. These events that were inside of Schoology are now added to my Google Calendar. If I'm sharing this calendar with other teachers, they can now see other events that are going on inside of my classroom. This is a great tool for collaborative planning, thematic units and also a great way to check to make sure you're not scheduling conflicting events or field trips with other teacher's events.
The next step is to talk about how we can take a calendar from Google and import it into Schoology. For example, in Google I was able to find a US Holidays calendar. I would really like those US Holidays to appear inside of Schoology, so as I'm planning out a unit I'll make sure to not plan something on a day that we won't be in school. I can do this by hovering over the U.S. holidays calendar, selecting the drop down menu and Choosing Calendar Settings. Under the calendar settings section there's three different addresses that I can use. There's an XML address, an ICAL and HTML address. I'm going to go and choose the ICAL address, by clicking this green button it's going to open up a dialog box where I can go ahead and copy and paste the ICAL address.
Again I'll use the keyboard shortcut of Cmd+C or Ctrl+C on the PC. Now over in Schoology, I'm going to come back to my main calendar. Here I have selected calendar in the left hand side. And I can see that there's just the events that I've currently created. What I'd like to do is go ahead and import this new calendar. To do this, I'm going to scroll down to the very bottom. And I'm going to click the Import tab. You'll also notice that this is another way that you can export your current calendar. So you can export your calendar from the Account Settings tab, or you can export it by clicking the Export button on the calendar page itself.
Please note, this Export button will only work if you've enabled calendar sharing. Okay, let's go ahead and click the Import button. I'm going to choose URL in the upper tabs, and I'm going to go and paste in the holidays calendar from Google. I'll click the Import button. And Schoology has now imported that holidays calendar. I'll head over to a different month, let's say September, and there we have it. Labor Day showing up, and Patriot Day showing up. As I move through the months, I can see that all the US holidays are now showing up inside of Schoology. So at this point, we've talked about how to link our Google Apps account, we can access our Google Drive inside of Schoology.
