Getting Started
Welcome
00:03Hello! I am Garrick Chow and welcome to How to use lynda.com.
00:07In this series of videos, we'll look at how to make your way around our web site, so you
00:11can make the most out of your subscription to the online training library, or even if
00:15you're not currently a member of our site, you can still watch this course in its entirety
00:18completely for free, and you'll be able to see what a subscription to our site has to offer.
00:23We'll start with a look at the navigation system and the many options you have for finding
00:26the topics and courses that interest you, and we'll see how to filter down the list
00:29of relevant courses to find exactly the information you need.
00:32You'll also learn the ins and outs of our custom video player and how to control Movie
00:36Playback options like Closed Captioning.
00:38I'll give you detailed descriptions of our current types of courses. So you'll understand
00:41the difference between an Essential Training Course, an Up and Running Course and a Creative Inspirations Documentary.
00:46We'll also talk about troubleshooting options and how to get answers to your questions about
00:50our site or our courses.
00:52We'll be covering all these topics, plus plenty of other areas of our site in How to use lynda.com.

Choosing the membership plan that meets your needs
00:00lynda.com offers four types of subscription levels for individual members.
00:04All four types give you complete and unlimited access to our entire online training library.
00:09Our most basic membership is a Monthly Subscription.
00:11For $25 per month, you get access to our entire library, and no long-term commitments.
00:16So, if you only want to sign up for a month or two, so you can learn a few things, this
00:19is the most cost-effective plan.
00:21If you think you'll be with us for at least a year, we offer an Annual Subscription for
00:25$250, which is like getting two months of access for free.
00:28Now, we also have premium versions of our monthly and annual memberships for $37.50
00:32per month or $375 per year respectively.
00:35In addition to the complete and unlimited access you get to all of our training courses
00:39that you get with the Monthly and Annual subscriptions, Premium Membership also gives you the ability
00:43to download and use the exercise files from our courses.
00:46So you can follow along performing the exact same actions and tasks as you see our instructors perform.
00:51So, if you're more of a hands-on learner, but have limited time, consider purchasing
00:55a Monthly Premium subscription.
00:57If you are able to commit to an entire year, the Annual Premium subscription is your best
01:00choice for the value, saving you $75 over the cost of the Monthly Premium service.
01:05But regardless of whichever membership level you choose, remember, you always have unlimited
01:09access to our entire online training library, so you can watch any courses or movies anytime you like.

1. Browsing the Online Training Library®
Navigating the site
00:00In this chapter, we'll look at the many ways in which you can search for and
00:03find the content and courses you're looking for on the online training library.
00:08Let's begin with a brief overview of our navigation system and the subsequent
00:11movies in this chapter will go into the specifics.
00:13Across the top of nearly every page of our site, you will find the
00:16Navigation Bar, which contains the primary menus you will use to find training courses.
00:20You can browse our library based on subject, software name, or author.
00:25The Navigation Bar is also where you'll find the Search Bar, which lets you
00:29search our site for a particular word or phrase.
00:31Again, we'll cover these Navigation Bar items individually in upcoming movies.
00:35For now, let's scroll down to the bottom of the page.
00:38This is where you will find the fat footer.
00:40And like the Navigation Bar, the fat footer appears on every page of our site.
00:44The fat footer contains links to non- course related sections of our site like
00:47news, information about our various products and subscription plans, and contact information.
00:54But this is also where you can browse our entire library's contents by these
00:57tabs which you can see offer more granular subcategories organized by subject,
01:02software, and our most viewed courses in each subject.
01:05You can even view a list containing every single course by clicking this link
01:08here which currently tells me there are 1,432 courses in all in the library.
01:14This list is sorted with the most recently released courses at the top of the
01:17list, though you can easily resort the list by clicking any of these headers.
01:21So for example, if I wanted to see all the courses listed alphabetically,
01:25I'd click Course Title.
01:27Clicking any column header a second time reverses the order,
01:31but scrolling through a list of every single course is probably the least
01:34efficient way of finding what you're looking for.
01:36In the following movies, we'll look at better ways to locate the information
01:38and movies you need.
01:39Let's return to the lynda.com homepage which you can always do by clicking the
01:43logo in the Navigation Bar, and we'll pick it up from here in the next movie.

Exploring the mobile site
00:00Watching lynda.com courses on your computer has always been a great way to learn
00:04and master the software and digital tools that are most important to you.
00:08Now the lynda.com mobile site lets you access our entire library of
00:11courses wherever you go.
00:13To access the mobile site, just open a web browser on your device and point
00:17it at m.lynda.com.
00:19Our mobile site works on iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.2 or later, as well
00:24as Android OS 2.0 or later, and BlackBerry OS 5.0 or later, and it works either
00:28over wi-fi or your cellular provider's network.
00:32If you have an iPad, we recommend that you use the regular www.lynda.com site,
00:37because the mobile site is optimized for devices with smaller screens.
00:41If you're a lynda.com member, click log in on the Home screen to enter your
00:45username and password.
00:51Once logged in, you'll be taken to the Homepage where you'll see a list of the
00:55items you last viewed, the items in your queue, your course history, as well as
00:59the list of our latest releases.
01:01So for example, if you want to start watching a course you had previously been
01:04watching, here on the Homepage you can scroll back up to last viewed to find the
01:09movies you most recently viewed and pick up where you last left off.
01:12You can always return to this page by tapping Home in the Navigation Bar.
01:16The other items in the Navigation Bar allow you to browse our library by
01:19subject, software, and author,
01:22but unlike our full site, these buttons don't open dropdown menus.
01:25Instead, you'll be taken to a page where you can browse these
01:28categories alphabetically.
01:29So for example, if you wanted to find some training on photography, you
01:32would tap subject, then P, and then Photography to see all the Photography
01:41related courses.
01:42When you find a course you'd like to watch, tap its name to open its
01:46Course Details page.
01:48Here you can tap to read the Course Description, and then browse through
01:51the Table of Contents.
01:53Use the triangles next to each chapter's name to collapse and expand that
01:57chapter, or tap expand all or collapse all, which can make it easier to browse
02:04the contents of longer courses.
02:08If you want to remind yourself to return to this course at a later time, tap the
02:12Add to Queue button to add it to your queue.
02:15You can get to your queue at any time by tapping your account name at the top of
02:18the screen and then tapping queue.
02:24Another way to find specific information is to use the Search Bar at the top of
02:28each page of the mobile site.
02:30Tap in the field, type your search terms, and then tap search.
02:38In a few moments, you'll see a list of courses matching your search.
02:42You can use this menu to sort your results by relevance, course name, learning
02:46level, duration, or release date.
02:49Tapping a course takes you directly to that course's details page, you can also
02:53see your search results by movie by tapping in the movie tab.
02:58Tapping a movie plays that movie right-away.
02:59(video playing)
03:15At the bottom of every page of the mobile site is the footer area, where you'll
03:19find links to other information or parts of the site you might want to visit,
03:23such as our about page, the site map or the subscribe page if you're not
03:26currently a member, and would like to sign-up.
03:29Also in the footer area is the link to the full site which takes you to the
03:34non-mobile version of lynda.com, so you can browse our website in the format and
03:38layout you see in your desktop web browser.
03:40Although, be aware that certain elements of the full site might not function
03:43depending on the device or browser you're using.
03:45And because of the smaller screen size of your device, you'll most likely have to
03:49zoom in to navigate the site as well.
03:50To return to the mobile version of the site, just type in the address
03:53m.lynda.com again, or use the Back button within your browser.
03:58The mobile site has been optimized for easy navigation on your device's screen,
04:00so if you're familiar with our full site, you shouldn't have any trouble finding
04:03what you're looking for, but you will find some key differences between the
04:06mobile and full versions of our site.
04:08For example, our mobile site does not currently support features such as
04:11bookmarks or closed captioning.
04:13To access these features, switch to the full version of the site.
04:17We hope you enjoy having access to the entire lynda.com library of courses
04:21from your mobile device.

Browsing by subject and subtopic
00:00Let's continue looking at how to browse the online training library with
00:03the Navigation Bar.
00:04Let's say you are interested in seeing what kind of courses we have related to business.
00:08Since that's not really a software- specific topic, the Subject menu is probably
00:12a good place to start.
00:13So I roll over Subject, and here I'll find Business.
00:16The number next to it tells me there are currently 305 courses related to
00:19business in our library.
00:20So I'll click to select that Subject.
00:24Now I see a list of those 305 courses related to Business organized by release date.
00:29But again, you can click any header to re-sort the list.
00:32But 305 courses is a lot to browse through, and most likely you have a
00:37specific type of business course in mind that you're looking for.
00:39So you can always pare down your results by using the filter terms you see here
00:42under the sections of topics, software, software company, and skill level.
00:47These filters appear in the order of the number of courses in each section.
00:50So for example, you can see there are 146 Microsoft courses under software
00:54company, and 36 courses related to Excel under software.
00:58Each filter list also has a View More menu where you can view additional filters.
01:01So maybe here under topics, I'll select Online Marketing, and now I am looking
01:07at just 12 courses, which is a much more manageable list of tutorials to browse
01:10through, so I can figure out which one I want to watch.
01:12But you can continue to add filters to pare down your list if necessary.
01:15Maybe I only want to see courses that relate to Online Marketing and Google,
01:20and now I only see the four courses that have to do with Online Marketing and Google.
01:24Now if the list was still really long, I could continue filtering.
01:27Notice that each filter term is listed up here.
01:30You can remove filters by clicking the X next to the filter name.
01:34But once you've find a course you'd like to watch, just click its title to be
01:39taken directly to that course's details page where you can read more about the
01:43course, and actually watch it.
01:44So that's how to browse for courses by subject.

Browsing by software or company
00:00When you're looking for courses on specific software products, use the Software
00:03menu found in the Navigation Bar.
00:06Here I'll find listings for both software companies as well as individual software titles.
00:10For example here under A, you can see both Adobe, the software company, as well
00:13as Acrobat and Audition which are both Adobe products.
00:16Or let's say I'm interested in learning Pro Tools.
00:19Now I already see Avid listed here which is the publisher of Pro Tools,
00:23but I can also see there are 30 courses that cover Avid software.
00:26I can narrow it down a bit by clicking P to see all the software that starts
00:31with that letter, and here's Pro Tools.
00:34And now I see all of our Pro Tools courses divided into their versions.
00:38I am interested in mainly Pro Tools 10 training, so I will click 10 to filter my
00:42search results to show only the tutorials on Pro Tools 10.
00:45And as we saw in the previous movie, I can continue to click filters to pare down my list.
00:48For example, I'll click Intermediate under skill level to see just the Pro Tools
00:52courses that are aimed at people who already have basic Pro Tools skills.
00:56Another way to filter your results once you arrive on the Software page is to
00:59use the menus found here in the header area.
01:02Notice I can click all courses to once again view all 21 Pro Tools related
01:05courses, or I can roll over version and select the version of Pro Tools I'd like to use.
01:11As you can see, choosing 10 has added that to my filters.
01:14I can also choose latest releases to see a list of the most recently released
01:18courses for Pro Tools, and the blog link will show me any blog entries
01:22related to Pro Tools.
01:23Now you won't always see these tabs with every piece of software, or software
01:27company page you land on.
01:29You only see them with the most popular software products and companies.
01:32You'll also find these tabs when you select items from the Subject menu.
01:36Notice the Audio subject area has a topics menu to let you filter down to
01:40specific audio related topics,
01:43and it also has the link to the latest releases in the subject area, and a link to the blog.
01:48Lastly, to go back to the Software menu, you'll find a view all link here.
01:53Click this if you'd like to browse a list of all the software products and
01:55companies we cover in alphabetical order.
01:58You can click any letter up here to jump to that point in the list, and that's
02:02how to browse by the Software menu found in the Navigation Bar.
Collapse this transcript
Browsing by author
00:00As you watch movies at lynda.com, you may find that you really connect with
00:04certain authors and their teaching styles and feel that you'd like to sample
00:08other courses by the same instructor.
00:09All you have to do is go to the author menu in the Navigation Bar, click the
00:12first letter of the author's first name, and locate him or her in the list.
00:17To the right of each name, you'll see the number of courses that author
00:19has recorded for us.
00:20Clicking the name takes you to that author's landing page where you can read a
00:23brief biography, and browse through the list of all of this author's courses.
00:27This list can be sorted by the title of the course, the skill level, the
00:31duration, the release date which is the default sorting scheme, and you can
00:35see whether each course has closed captioning, and whether it's available to
00:38be purchased on disc.
00:40To see a complete list of all of our authors, go back to the author menu
00:43and click view all.
00:46And on this page, you can scroll through to browse through all of our authors
00:49in alphabetical order.
00:51Again, clicking a name will take you directly to that author's landing page.

Finding the latest releases
00:00As a member of lynda.com, you'll always see our latest releases here on our homepage.
00:05We release more than two dozen courses every month,
00:07so this list is updated frequently.
00:09You can navigate through the list in chronological order by using the Next and
00:12Previous buttons located here at the bottom of the module, or you can use the
00:17tabs that you find here at the top to filter the new releases by subject making
00:21it easier to find the courses that most interest you.
00:24Clicking a thumbnail plays the intro movie or trailer for that particular course or title.
00:27(video playing)
00:32"Hi! I am Garrick Chow and welcome to the first in our series on iPad music production.
00:36This course is called inputs, mics, and MIDI, and in it, we'll be exploring many
00:41different options and accessories that make it possible for you to record just
00:44about any type of sound or musical instrument into your iPad."
00:49And clicking the course's name takes you to that course's details page, where
00:52you can watch the entire course or pick and choose the movies you'd like to see.
00:57We also offer the option of subscribing to the latest releases RSS Feed, and
01:00I'll show you how to do that in the next movie.

Subscribing to the Latest Releases RSS feed
00:00Many websites these days offer news, announcements, and other constantly
00:04changing information in the form of RSS feeds, and lynda.com is no exception.
00:09In case you're not familiar with the term RSS, it can stand for Rich Site
00:12Summary, or Really Simple Syndication.
00:14It depends on who you ask.
00:16But the point of an RSS feed is that it allows content providers to offer
00:20information in a form their users can subscribe to.
00:22Subscribing to an RSS feed means you don't have to remember to visit a website
00:27for updated information.
00:28All you need is an RSS Reader, sometimes called a Newsreader or a News
00:32Aggregator, and you'll automatically receive up-to-date information from any RSS
00:35feed you subscribe to.
00:38For example, lynda.com offers a Latest Releases RSS feed, which keeps you
00:41updated on our newest titles and courses.
00:44So here on our homepage, I'll find this RSS link.
00:48Clicking it takes you to our New Releases RSS feed.
00:50The address in the address bar here is our feed address, and it's this address
00:55you can copy and paste into whichever newsreader you prefer.
00:57There are many third-party RSS readers available, but you can also subscribe to
01:01RSS feeds through a service like the free Google Reader.
01:05All you need is a Google account which you already have if you have a Gmail
01:08account or if you use any of Google's other services.
01:12Just go to google.com/reader and log into your account.
01:20Then all you have to do is start adding subscriptions by adding the RSS feeds
01:23you want to subscribe to.
01:24So I will go back to the lynda.com feed, I'll copy that address, and now I will
01:31paste it into Google Reader.
01:32I'll click Subscribe, paste in the address, and click Add.
01:36And you can see that I've now subscribed to lynda.com New Releases for all
01:41courses, and I can scroll through now to see this list of all of our
01:43recently released courses.
01:45So that's really all there is to it, and you can add as many feeds as you like.
01:50For example, at lynda.com, we also have a frequently updated blog at blog.lynda.com.
01:56Instead of having to visit the blog in my web browser when I remember to do
01:59so, I can just go to the RSS feed, again copy the address, and then subscribe
02:07to it in Google Reader.
02:11So you can see now I am subscribed to the lynda blog.
02:14And you will find that Google Reader and most news aggregators offer you
02:17different ways to view the feed.
02:19For instance, with this view, I am viewing just the titles and then I can click
02:23in the article I am interested in reading.
02:25So you can see how convenient it can be to have all of your frequently
02:27visited pages' RSS feeds in one place rather than having to visit them
02:31individually in your web browser.
02:33All I have to do now is just select the RSS feed here to see the latest information.
02:38Google Reader keeps track of the new articles I haven't yet read, so I can see
02:40at a glance if any new content has been added to the feed.
02:43So if you haven't played around much with RSS feeds and newsreaders, you really
02:46should give them a try, especially if you find yourself frequently visiting the
02:49same sites for the latest information.
02:51If an RSS feed is available, you can subscribe to it and really cut down on your
02:55surfing around time.
02:57And we hope you'll add the lynda.com New Releases and Blog feeds to your newsreader.

Finding the most-viewed courses in the fat footer
00:00If you're ever not quite sure where to start or what to learn next, try scrolling down
00:04to the fat footer area of any page on our site and clicking the most viewed courses tab.
00:10Often times, this area can be a good barometer of not just what the most popular software
00:14products are in any given field at that moment, but also what aspects of the software or subject
00:18other people are most interested in.
00:20For example, under Photography, the top course right now is Photoshop CS5 Essential Training,
00:25and it's followed by Photoshop CS5 One-on-One: Fundamentals, and then Foundations of Photography:
00:30Composition, Foundations of Photography: Exposure, and Photoshop CS5 for Photographers.
00:35This is actually a pretty good mix in here.
00:37So, maybe I feel pretty comfortable working with my photos in Photoshop already, and I'm
00:41wondering where to go from there.
00:43I can see these two Foundations of Photography courses seem pretty popular.
00:46Foundations of Photography: Exposure, for example, is a course that teaches you how
00:50to properly adjust your camera's exposure settings and doesn't really get into software at all.
00:54Now, someone who is interested in becoming a better photographer, this would probably
00:57be a good course for me to check out, and I might not have found this popular course
01:00as easily simply by trying to browse through the Photography section of the site.
01:04But because it's popular course, it shows up as one of the top titles in this category.
01:07There's another example right now, it looks like Maya 2011 Essential Training is the most
01:11viewed under 3D and Animation.
01:13So, if I were interested in learning 3D animation, this is probably a good indication that I
01:17should check out this software, and this course.
01:19Excel 2010 Essential Training is popular under both Business and Home Computing, which seems
01:24to indicate that many people have migrated from the previous 2007 version of the software
01:28to the 2010 release.
01:30Under Video, After Effects CS5 Essential Training is currently more popular than the Premiere
01:34and Final Cut courses.
01:35So, browsing around in this area, you can really get a sense of what other people are
01:39watching and learning.
01:40So the next time you're wondering what to learn next, be sure to take some time and
01:43look through the most viewed courses area of the fat footer.

Finding content with the Search feature
00:00If browsing with the navigation bar isn't helping you find the course or content you're
00:03looking for, try using the search bar found at the top of each page of our site.
00:08Begin by typing a search term into the search bar, for example, CSS.
00:11Notice that after a second, some suggestions appear under the search field.
00:16These are all individual courses, and you can click any of these suggestions to go directly
00:19to that course's landing page, or if you don't see a course that looks like what you're searching
00:23for, press Enter or Return or click the Search button to initiate your search for the word
00:27or phrase you typed.
00:30Our search engine then looks through every single course, movie, description, and even
00:33Closed Caption transcripts of individual movies to return a list of results matching your search term.
00:40By default, search results are sorted by course as you can see with the Course Tab selected here.
00:45Currently, I have 209 matches for CSS and more than 3,000 individual movies that mentioned
00:51CSS, and that's probably too many movies to look through.
00:54I can narrow down the list of movies by clicking through the filter terms under these headings,
00:57subject, software, software company, author, and release year.
01:02Under each one of these headings, results are listed in the order of categories with the most matches.
01:06For example, under Subject, I can see Web and Interactive has 2855 matches, and Developer
01:11has 847, and so on.
01:14You can click on any appropriate categories to narrow down your search.
01:17For example, maybe I'm looking for instruction on working with CSS and Adobe Dreamweaver,
01:21so I'll click Dreamweaver. That takes me down to 1072 matches.
01:26And maybe I'm only interested in tutorials using Dreamweaver CS5, so I'll click CS5 under
01:30version, and in this way, I continue to pare down my search results.
01:36Once you have your search results filtered down, you can read through those results.
01:39You can also click on any of these column headings to sort the results by that heading.
01:42For example, I could click Duration to view my results from the shortest movies to the longest.
01:47Clicking any header a second time reverses that order.
01:50If you're currently signed in to your account, clicking a movie name will immediately play that movie.
01:54Now, if you find the Movies Tab displays too many results for you to effectively find what
01:58you're looking for, try clicking the Courses Tab which displays your search results by
02:03the courses your search term appears in.
02:05So, instead of seeing say 50 results from a single course under the Movies Tab, you'll
02:09just see that course name appear once under the Courses Tab, which might be more manageable for you.
02:13So, in this case, I have just two courses that match my initial search of CSS, and filtered
02:18by Dreamweaver, and CS5.
02:19But again, I can remove filters, and now, I'm seeing 50 courses that deal with CSS and Dreamweaver.
02:26So, filters can really help you narrow down and expand your results.
02:30Now, the tab labeled Entire Site is for searching all the non-course related pages at lynda.com.
02:34So, for example, you might see search results that appear in author bios, blog entries,
02:39or our company newsletter.
02:41Depending on the information you're looking for, you might find it in our blog or newsletter.
02:44So, be sure to check the Entire Site Tab when performing your search.
02:48And lastly, I want to point out that, yes, there are two search fields visible when you're
02:52looking through your search results.
02:53You have the search field that's always in the navigation bar, and this one here under
02:57the Search Results Tab.
02:59The only difference between the two is that the one here under the Search Results Tab
03:02contains the term you searched for which can be useful if you've forgotten the exact wording
03:06or phrase you initially searched for.
03:08But either field can be used to perform another search.
03:10Just click in either one, type a word or phrase, and then click Search.

Using the Site Map
00:00At the bottom of the fat footer on each page, you'll find a link to our Site Map.
00:04If for some reason you're having trouble finding information about our company or courses using
00:08other navigation or links, try visiting the site map.
00:12The site map is organized into the sections of company, categories, courses, and training CDs/DVDs.
00:18Here under company, you'll find links to pages about lynda.com, our various products and
00:23solutions, news and press releases, as well as links to contact us and to our frequently asked questions.
00:31Under the Categories section, you'll find all of our courses divided into subjects,
00:36software, software company, and author.
00:41This pretty much mimics the same functionality you'll get from the navigation menu at the
00:44top of each page as well as the Subjects and Software sections of the fat footer, which you can see here.
00:52So really, this area of the site map is just another option for searching for courses.
00:57Now, the Courses section of the site map lists every single course in our library alphabetically.
01:02You can click any letter to jump to that section.
01:04Now, I do want to emphasize here that this is alphabetical by course name, not by software name.
01:10So, while many of our courses begin with the software product's name, don't click on say
01:13the letter D thinking you'll be able to find all the Dreamweaver courses.
01:17While most of them are here, notice we also have courses like Creating a First Web Site
01:22with Dreamweaver CS5 up here under C.
01:24If you want to search the site for a course by the software name, go back to the Categories
01:28Tab of the site map.
01:31And the last section of the site map is training CDs/DVDs.
01:34We don't publish every one of our courses on physical disks, but this is where you'll
01:37find the list of all the courses that we do publish on CD or DVD.
01:41Again, these are presented alphabetically by the name of the course.
01:44Clicking the course's name here takes you to our store where you can read more about
01:47the course and purchase the CD or DVD.

2. Watching the Training
Navigating a course details page
00:00Each course page in the online training library is organized into a series of tabs, making
00:05it simple for you to quickly browse through and find the information you're looking for.
00:08When you first arrive on a course's page, the table of contents tab is opened by default,
00:12and to the left is a description of the course so you can see what the course covers, who
00:16it's designed for, and other relevant information such as the course's duration and release date.
00:21Using the Table of Contents, you can browse through the chapters and movies contained in the course.
00:26If you're not a member of the online training library, you'll be able to sample a handful
00:29of free movies from each course.
00:31Free movies are listed in blue.
00:33If you're a member and are currently logged in, you'll have access to all of the movies.
00:36I'll go ahead and log in now.
00:43So now that I've logged in, you can see that all the movies are now available to me.
00:47So to view a movie, simply click its name.
00:52(male speaker: The first fundamental principle of time management is space.)
00:58And when you're done watching the current movie, you can close this window and select another one.
01:05(male speaker: The second fundamental principle of time management is stop using your mind as a gathering point.)
01:12Clicking the arrows next to chapter titles alternates between showing and hiding that chapter's contents.
01:17Some chapters can be quite lengthy, and temporary collapsing their contents makes it easier
01:21to browse the chapter titles and get a better overview of the course as a whole.
01:25You can use the Collapse All and Expand All buttons to collapse and expand all the chapters at once.
01:30So with collapse all selected I can browse through all the chapter names, and then I
01:34can click expand all to see all the individual movies again.
01:37Now be aware that clicking a chapter's name, however, is a shortcut for playing all the
01:40movies on that chapter continuously, so make sure you're using the arrows next to the name
01:44to expand and collapse, and click the chapter name itself if you want to play the entire chapter.
01:52Notice here in the player that auto-play chapter is now set to on, and that just means that
01:55all the movies in this chapter will play continuously back to back until I close this window.
02:00And that can be convenient if you intend on watching all the movies in a chapter and don't
02:05want to have to open and close each movie individually.
02:07If exercise files for the course are available you'll find them under the exercise files tab.
02:12If the course doesn't use exercise files, you won't see this tab.
02:15If you're premium level subscriber to the online training library, the exercise files
02:18tab is where you'll be able to download the images, video clips, filters, and other assorted
02:23files the author uses in the course, so you can work along with each movie using the exact
02:27same assets you see on screen.
02:29If you're monthly or annual level subscriber or if you're not a subscriber at all and are
02:32just browsing through our library, this is where you'll find information on subscribing
02:36or updating your subscription to premium level to gain access to the exercise files.
02:41Exercise files are compressed in the zip format for easy downloading, and clicking on the files
02:44begins the download.
02:45Next we have the Transcript tab.
02:48In courses that have closed captioning available, you can view the text transcript of each movie
02:52simply by clicking on the movie's name.
02:56From here you can read through the content of the movie which can often give you a better
02:59idea of whether or not the movie contains the information you'd like to learn.
03:03If you find what you're looking for, note the time code, and then you can click any
03:06of the time codes to open that specific movie.
03:10(male speaker: It's my goal to help you make a lasting change.)
03:14And then you can just jump forward to the point you want to watch.
03:19(male speaker: So, the next time you think that buying a new tool will make you more productive--)
03:27Just like in the table of contents tab, you can use the expand all and collapse all buttons
03:31to expand and collapse the list of chapters and movies.
03:34If you've opened multiple transcripts, clicking collapse all and then expand all is a fast
03:38way to close them all and start with just the list of chapters and movies again.
03:42Under the Transcript tab you can also search the transcript for specific words or phrases.
03:46This Search this course area is identical to the one found in the Header area here,
03:50but don't confuse that with the Search bar up here.
03:52The one at the very top in the navigation bar is for searching our entire site.
03:56These two are for searching this specific course.
03:58So, for example, let's say I want to learn more about the time management principle of gathering points.
04:03I'll type gathering points, and I can press Return or Enter or click Submit, and in just
04:10a second I receive a list of all the movies within this course that contain the phrase
04:13I'm looking for with each movie's name accompanied by a number indicating how many times that
04:17word or phrase appears in the movie.
04:19You can click a movie to toggle open its transcript, and that way you can see your phrase and context
04:24and determine if the movie contains the information you're looking for.
04:27Notice each instance of the phrase is highlighted.
04:29So being able to read the transcript is a great way to figure out whether a movie is
04:32relevant to your interest before you take the time to open and watch it.
04:36Okay, the next tab is the Author tab.
04:40Here you'll find a profile of the course's author and a list of all the courses he or
04:43she has recorded for the online training library.
04:46This author tab is the place to go if you enjoy the teaching style of a particular author
04:49and would like to watch other courses by him or her.
04:52Next we have the Preferences tab.
04:55Here you can choose which type of player you want to use to watch our videos.
04:58Now each option does let you watch all the movies in a course, but some of these players
05:02offer additional playback features.
05:03You can find the chart showing the differences between the players by following this link.
05:07So, for example, you can see that the Flash player is the only one that allows you to
05:11make the movie window as large as you want.
05:14All the players support Closed Captioning, the QuickTime Custom player is the only one
05:18that has playback Speed Controls and QuickTime Standard is not compatible with 64-Bit Systems,
05:23and it doesn't support our Bookmarks feature.
05:25So you can set your preferences right from here, so for instance, if I wanted to switch
05:28to the Flash player I could select that and click Update, and I can see that my global
05:33player preference have been updated to Flash.
05:35I'll go back to the course details page we're just looking at by clicking my browser's Back button.
05:40Now also under Preferences here, we can turn Closed captioning On or Off.
05:43Now note that these two settings, Video player and Closed Captioning, apply to all the courses
05:47and movies you're watching on our site and not just to the course you're currently watching,
05:51so these are global settings.
05:54And lastly we have the Clear Viewed Icons button.
05:57You've probably already noticed that as you make your way through a course an Eye icon
06:00appears next to the movies you've already watched, making it easy to see which movies
06:04you've already gone through and which movies you still need to watch.
06:07If you've completely finished a course and want to watch it again using these icons to
06:10keep yourself organized, or if you just find the icons distracting, simply visit the course
06:15Preferences tab, click Clear Viewed Icons, and you can see all those icons have now been removed.
06:22Note that clearing viewed icons doesn't affect your movie history. Our system will still
06:25remember which movies you've watched, and you can still access your entire list of completed
06:29movies by going to My Courses and selecting Course History.
06:34And here you can switch between course history, movie history, and recent activity.
06:39I'll hit the Back button a couple of times to go back to the course page I was looking at.
06:44And lastly, we have the FAQs tab.
06:46And this is where you'll find any frequently asked questions, errata, or other useful information about the course.
06:51And if you do see any questions here, you can click them to expand it to see the answer.
06:56Whether you see any information in this area is going to vary from course to course, but
06:59we do frequently add answers to common questions we receive about our courses.
07:03So there you have the tabs of the course description pages.
Collapse this transcript
Downloading and using the exercise files
00:00If you have a monthly or annual Premium subscription to the lynda.com online
00:04training library you have access to the same example files used by the
00:07instructors in the courses you watch, allowing you to follow along, doing
00:11exactly what the instructor is doing with photos, videos, audio files, business
00:15documents, and so on.
00:17The files are provided in the ZIP compression format.
00:19To download the files associated with the course you're watching, go to the
00:22exercise files tab of the course, and then click the link for the files you'll find here.
00:29If you're using Windows you may be asked whether you want to save or run the
00:33files you're downloading.
00:34Click Save to save the ZIP file to your computer.
00:38Mac OS X has the built-in ability to unpack ZIP files and most Windows PCs have
00:42preinstalled software for unpacking ZIP files as well.
00:45Okay, I can see it's finished.
00:47I'm just going to right-click on that and choose to Open the Containing Folder,
00:51there it is, and I'm just going to move that to my desktop for simplicity sake.
00:56So if you're a Windows user, your preinstalled software for unpacking ZIP files
00:59may automatically unpack the files for you.
01:01If nothing happens you can right-click on the compressed file and choose Extract
01:05All, choose a location, again I'm recommending the Desktop, choose Extract, and
01:14once it's done I now have the uncompressed files to work with.
01:19Similarly if you're a Mac user, your Mac may have automatically uncompressed the
01:23file for you, but if it didn't, again just double-click the file, and again I've
01:29got the uncompressed versions of the files to work with now.
01:33Once the exercise files have been expanded you can delete the ZIP file or keep
01:37it as a clean backup copy of the files you're working on.
01:40The instructor of the course you're watching will explain how to use the
01:42files you've downloaded.

Searching the video transcripts for a specific word or phrase
00:00As mentioned in an earlier movie, one of the tabs you'll find on most course details pages
00:04is the Transcript tab.
00:06All new courses at lynda.com have transcripts provided within a few days or just a week
00:10or two after the release, and we're constantly updating older courses with transcript as well.
00:15This allows us to not only provide closed captioning for our members with hearing impairments,
00:18but transcripts also make it possible for search engines to index our course content
00:22and for our members to find and navigate relevant course information.
00:26If you see this CC Icon in the Search Field in the Course Details page's Header area,
00:30you'll know that the course has transcripts available.
00:33And you can search transcript by typing a word or phrase into either of these fields,
00:36either here in the Header area, or here in the Search field under the Transcript tab.
00:40This makes it easy to see if the course you're browsing contains the information you're looking for.
00:44For example, in the course on using eBay I would like to know if the author covers the
00:47topic of sniping, which is the act of swooping into the last few seconds of an auction to place a bid.
00:53So I'll type sniping, and I'll click Submit.
00:57And here I can see that two movies in this course contain that word, including a movie
01:00that is in fact about sniping.
01:02Clicking on a movie title opens its transcript and my search term is highlighted.
01:07Just scroll all the way down, and there it is.
01:09Now reading the transcript around the search term can help determine if this movie is relevant
01:13to what I'm looking for.
01:14And in this case it looks like sniping is only mentioned this one time, and this really
01:17only mentioned in passing.
01:19So I'll click Collapse this transcript, to close it up, and now I'll check out the other
01:23search result, and you can see that the word sniping appears 9 times in this movie.
01:27And clearly, since this movie is called Sniping, this is the moving that has the information I'm looking for.
01:32Just quickly glancing through the transcript, I can see that the author starts out with
01:35a definition of Sniping, how it's done, and then how you can find software to do the sniping
01:39for you automatically, how some people object to sniping and say it's unfair, and so on.
01:44So yes, most likely I want to watch this movie I found.
01:46And again, you can click any of the time codes along the way to open the movie and start watching.
01:52(male speaker: Auction sniping has been very popular since the first online auction appeared on the internet.)
01:58If you want to search for another term, you can go back to the top of the page.
02:01I can click Clear Search Results to empty the Search fields, and you can see that actually
02:05then displays all the chapters and movies below.
02:08So when there's no search term in the Search field, you're free to pop-up in the transcript
02:11of any movie to scan through and see if it's something you want to watch.
02:15And again, you can click chapter or movie names to browse or expand them.
02:19And of course, you also have the Collapse All and Expand All buttons up here.
02:24So Collapse all can give you a better overview of the course as a whole, and then you can
02:28click Expand All to see all the movies within the chapters again.
Collapse this transcript
Choosing the right video player for your needs
00:00The movies in our online training library are presented in multiple formats, giving you
00:04the ability to choose the video player type that best suits your needs.
00:07Well, sign into your account, go to My AccountSite Preferences, and here you can view and select
00:13the video player of your choice.
00:14The choices of Flash, QuickTime Standard, and QuickTime Custom are available on both the
00:18Mac and Windows operating systems.
00:20And if you are on Windows, as I'm here, you'll have your additional choice of Windows Media.
00:24Now your choice of player may boil down to simply wanting to select the player that's
00:27native to your operating system and doesn't require you to install any additional plug-ins.
00:32For instance, if you're on Windows you'll have to download and install the Adobe Flash
00:35Player and Apple QuickTime Player plug-in from their respective sites.
00:38You would have to go to get.adobe.com/flashplayer to get Flash or go to apple.com/quicktime to get QuickTime.
00:47So you would need those to plug-ins in order to view videos in those formats, but if you
00:50use Windows Media, you will be available to play your videos without any additional plug-ins.
00:55Similarly if you're on a Mac, you'll be able to use either QuickTime format, but you'll
00:58need to download the Flash plug-in.
01:00These days though, it's probably unlikely you don't have the Flash plug-in installed regardless
01:04of what platform you're on.
01:05So you should also take a look at this table.
01:07Notice each player type has certain features unique to itself as well as features shared
01:11with some or all of the other players.
01:13For example, all the players support Closed Captioning.
01:16QuickTime Standard is the only one that doesn't support adding Bookmarks from within the Player
01:19window, and it's the only one not compatible with 64-Bit operating systems.
01:23QuickTime Custom and Windows Media are the only two that allow you to adjust the speed
01:27of playback, and Flash is the only player that allows you to adjust the size of the video.
01:32So all you need to do here is select the player you want to use and click Update, and you'll
01:36see a message telling you, Your global player preferences have been updated.
01:39And want it means by global player preferences as that you're setting the player preferences
01:43for all the movies you watch on our site.
01:45Now I just selected QuickTime Standard, but really its features are pretty limited when
01:48compared to the other players.
01:49So I'm going to switch back to QuickTime Custom.
01:51Again, my choice is instantly recognized.
01:54So now if I go to look at a course, and I play a movie.
02:04(female speaker: Cropping a photo hides part of the edges from view.)
02:08So I now see the QuickTime Custom Interface.
02:11Here the Speed Control is down here, here are my Bookmarks buttons, and I have the usual
02:15set of other controls.
02:17Let me close that for a moment.
02:19Now if you change your mind about which player you want to use, or if you find you're having
02:22trouble loading movies with a certain player, you can always try another one.
02:25Now while you're on a Course page, you can go to the Preferences Tab--which is a shortcut
02:29to your site-wide player preferences-- and from here maybe I'll choose Flash.
02:34Note that if you're not a member of the online training library, or if you are but just aren't
02:37logged-in, you can still access these Preferences under this tab to try different player types.
02:42So I'll click Update Preferences, you'll see the message that it has been updated.
02:45I'll go back to the Table of Contents, and I'll play that movie again.
02:51(female speaker: Cropping a photo hides part of the edges from view.)
02:55Now at first glance, the window looks similar.
02:57I can add Bookmarks, I have the same playback controls, but notice with the Flash player
03:01I don't have the Speed Controls, and like the QuickTime Custom Player I have a Maximize button here.
03:07So I can zoom the movie to full- screen size, and I can minimize that again.
03:12So those are the various player types available to you, and that's how you go about setting your player preferences.
Collapse this transcript
Using basic video player controls
00:00Here's a quick overview of the player controls you see while watching movies.
00:04Now as mentioned previously, some controls will only be available when certain player
00:07types are selected.
00:08If I go over to the Preferences tab on this course details page, I can see I currently
00:12have the Flash Player Selected.
00:13So let's go back to the Table of Contents and start a movie playing by clicking its name.
00:20(male speaker: If you've ever tried to use InDesign's Shear tool, you may have experienced more than
00:24a little difficulty in understanding how it works and getting the results you want.)
00:28So in the bottom left of the window you'll find the Volume Controls. You can slide left
00:32to decrease the volume and right to increase the volume.
00:34This Volume control is independent of your computer's volume controls.
00:38So if you have the volume all the way up, and it's still not loud enough for you, try
00:41turning your computer speakers up.
00:43As with most video players, you have a playback progress area. This is a playhead that lets
00:47you know how far along you are in the movie. You can drag or scrub it left and right to
00:51move forward or back in the movie.
00:54Notice the Time Indicator reflects your position in the movie, and you can also click anywhere
00:57in the Scrubber bar to jump to a section of the movie.
01:00At the bottom center we have the Playback controls. You've already seen me play and
01:04pause the movie several times using this center button here.
01:07Now don't confuse the buttons on either side of the Play/Pause controls as rewind or fast-forward.
01:12Clicking these buttons will take you to the previous and next movie in the course, so
01:15only click them if you're ready to stop watching the current movie.
01:18Now a feature unique to the Flash Player is the Maximize button.
01:22Clicking that expands the movie to fit your entire screen.
01:25At that point it becomes the Minimize button, which you can click to take the movie back
01:28to its default size.
01:31And also with the Flash Player, you can drag the lower right-hand corner of the movie window
01:34to manually adjust its size.
01:36Notice how the movie scales right along with the window.
01:38This can be convenient if you have limited screen real estate and want to work along with the movie.
01:42You can try reducing the size of the movie and placing it in a corner so you can see
01:45your other windows.
01:47Notice if you make the movie window really small, the playback controls start getting
01:50cut off, so you have to make the window larger to get at certain controls.
01:55To return to its regular size, click Maximize and then Minimize again, and once again this
02:00resizing capability is only available when you have the Flash Player selected.
02:04So that's a quick overview of the basic playback controls.
02:07Now there are other features found in the player window, such as the Closed Captioning
02:10button and the auto-play chapter button, but we'll look at those in their own movies.

Changing the playback speed of the videos
00:00The playback speed of our movies can be adjusted on the fly if you're using the QuickTime Custom
00:04Player or the Windows Media Player.
00:06Again, from any Course page, go to the Preferences tab, and from here you make sure you have either
00:10QuickTime Custom or Windows Media selected, and then click Update Preferences.
00:15Windows Media will only show up as an option if you're on Windows.
00:18Then return to the course's Table of Contents and play a movie.
00:24(male speaker: In this movie, I'm going to show you how to change the size and resolution at which an image prints.)
00:30You can increase the speed of a movie to either 1.5 times or 2 times its original speed.
00:35With most of our courses, you'll find that the author is still perfectly understandable
00:38at either of those faster speeds, and you'll get through the movies quicker this way as
00:42long as you don't mind the author sounding a bit like a cartoon chipmunk.
00:45(male speaker: And we're going to do so without harming a single pixel inside the image--in other words,
00:49the image size will not change. I'm working inside the version of the graphic that I scanned at a high resolution.)
00:55Contrarily, if you're having trouble comprehending what an instructor is saying, and you need
00:59to slow things down a bit click the far left position.
01:03In some cases this might help you better understand what is being said.
01:05(male speaker: Now there's two ways to change the size at which an image prints. One is to go to the File menu--)
01:12And of course, reset the playback speed to its default setting to hear and see everything at regular speed.
01:18(male speaker: --and choose the Print command, or you can press that standard keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+P or Command+P on a Mac.)

Playing an entire chapter continuously
00:00While you're free to jump around a training course, clicking and watching any movies you
00:03like in any order you like, there will be times when you'll want to watch a chapter
00:07in its entirety and in order.
00:09To do so, click the first movie in the chapter, or whichever movie you would like to start with.
00:14(male speaker: As I mentioned, this course does expect at least basic familiarity with reading and--)
00:19In the movie playback window next to the playback controls, you'll find the auto-play chapter button.
00:24Clicking it turns auto-play on.
00:26That indicates that you've chosen to play the rest of the chapter.
00:28So when this movie reaches its end, instead of just stopping and you having to manually
00:33close the window and open the next movie, it will immediately load and play the next
00:37movie in the chapter. So if I play this out.
00:40(male speaker: Let's take a look at a real Objective-C program.)
00:43You can see it immediately loads and plays the next movie.
00:46(male speaker: I'm going to open up Xcode and create a very simple project.)
00:49And it will continue to play each subsequent movie until the last movie of the chapter
00:54is reached, at which point you can click the Next Movie button to start playing the first
00:57movie of the next chapter, or you can just close the window to browse through the table
01:01of contents and find another movie you like to watch.
01:03Now another way to play an entire chapter is to click the chapter name in the table of contents.
01:07That starts the first movie in the chapter playing, and it also turns on the auto-play
01:11chapter button, so that all the other movies in the chapter will play continuously from that point on.
01:16(male speaker: So let's get back to actually creating some iOS applications. As we've seen, when I make a new--)

Turning on closed captioning
00:00As previously mentioned, each new course released on the online training library includes transcripts
00:05of each movie, which are usually added anywhere between a few days to a week or two after
00:09the course is released.
00:10If you see this little CC icon here in the header of the course's Details page, that
00:14lets you know that the course has transcripts added.
00:16And again, closed captioning has multiple purposes.
00:19First, it allows our members with hearing impairments to be able to follow along with our training.
00:23But closed captioning can also be convenient if you're in an environment where you can't
00:26listen to audio or if you don't have headphones and don't want to bother people around you.
00:30In those cases, you can simply turn your computer's volume off, turn on closed captioning, and
00:34you'll still be able to learn.
00:35Now you can turn closed captioning on and off in two ways.
00:37First, you can go to the Preferences tab on any course page that has closed captions and
00:42here select On under Closed captioning and click Update Preferences.
00:47With that selected, all movies will play with closed captions on.
00:50So if I go back to my table of contents, and I click a movie... (video playing)
00:57And I can even turn the volume down, and I can still follow along with the movie now
01:00because I can read the closed captions.
01:05Notice the CC icon here in the Playback controls is highlighted.
01:09So you can also turn closed captions on and off by toggling the CC button.
01:14Now even if I have closed captions turned off when I close this player window, notice
01:19it's still checked as On here under preferences.
01:21So if I were to play another movie, you can see closed captions are still on.
01:29And of course, I can toggle them off again, but to adjust their default state, I need
01:35to go back to Preferences and turn them back Off and click Update Preferences.
01:40And that's how you work with closed captions in any one of our courses that has them.

Providing feedback about the content you've watched
00:00After you've watched some or most of a training title, you may have a few comments or thoughts
00:04about the course, the instructor, or the way the material was presented, and we would really
00:08love to hear from you.
00:10While signed into your account, at the bottom of the table of contents for every course,
00:13you'll find a Course Feedback button.
00:16Clicking that link takes you to a short evaluation survey where you can rate your experience
00:20and satisfaction level with the course.
00:22We appreciate any feedback you'd like to provide.
00:24Your thoughts and suggestions help shape our future tutorials and the subjects we cover

01:45play the movies through.
01:46Regardless of what screen your Apple TV is currently on, the movie should begin
01:49playing after a few seconds.
01:51While the movie is playing, you can control it from your device or with
01:54your Apple TV remote.
01:56In addition to playing and pausing the movie, you can rewind 30 seconds, skip to
02:02the next or previous movies, or drag the scrubber bar to jump to a specific
02:10point in the currently playing movie.
02:15Tap to turn Auto-play on if you'd like the entire course to play continuously,
02:21and tap Back when you want to stop playing and resume browsing the library from your device.
02:26So if you have an Apple TV and the free lynda.com iOS app, we hope you will
02:30take advantage of this quick and easy ability to move your training to the big screen.

3. Understanding the Types of Courses We Offer
Creative Inspirations
00:00If you've spend much time browsing the online training library, you're probably aware that
00:04our courses are not only about teaching you how to use a software product.
00:08However, you might not be familiar with all the different series or types of courses we offer.
00:12So in this chapter, we're going to take a closer look at the many types of courses you'll find at lynda.com.
00:16Let's begin with our Creative Inspirations series, which are part of the documentary titles we publish.
00:21And you can find them by going to the Subject menu and choosing Documentaries, and here
00:27you can filter for Creative Inspirations either by clicking it as a subtopic here or using
00:31the Series menu in the Header bar and choosing Creative Inspirations from here.
00:37Creative Inspirations is our flagship documentary series featuring top creative professionals
00:41who share with us how they think, work, and how they got to the pinnacle of their respective fields.
00:46We feature exemplary individuals and companies in the fields of design, photography, music
00:51and many other creative walks of life.
00:53Told entirely in their own words, each installment gives you an inside perspective to experience
00:57firsthand what makes our subjects unique and most of all, inspiring.
01:01Here you can see the Creative Inspiration titles are listed by release date, and you
01:04can see the name of our subjects followed by their professions.
01:07You can click any one of these to view that title.
01:10And as you can see, the Creative Inspiration titles are laid out like any other course
01:14in the online training library with tabs for the table of contents, transcripts, and so on.
01:20As usual, you can click on any video to watch it.
01:22Most of our Creative Inspiration titles offer two viewing options.
01:26You can watch the entire title as a single uninterrupted movie or view the movie in chapters
01:30so you can quickly jump to the portion of the movie that most interests you.
01:33So, for example, if I wanted to learn about the Doyald's story first, I could click that movie.
01:41(music playing)
01:46(male speaker: This is the Oxford English Dictionary. It's 13 volumes here. There are four more volumes,

02:00The first time a word was used in the English language is recorded here.
02:07I did not finish high school. I didn't even complete the 10th grade. And throughout--)
02:13So if you haven't yet watched any movies from our Creative Inspirations series, you'll definitely
02:17want to make the time to do so.
02:18You'll undoubtedly walk away feeling inspired and energized.

Getting Started
00:00Our Up and Running series of courses are short instructional introductions that cover both
00:04the new and existing primary features and abilities of software applications.
00:08They're designed to help you become familiar with what a software application can do and
00:12to help you learn key tasks and workflows.
00:14Throughout the online training library you'll find Up and Running courses for many topics
00:18and software products, like Photoshop for photography, TypeKit, Squarespace, Office
00:26365, and many, many more.
00:29Up and Running courses are ideal for anyone who might not have the time to invest in our
00:32longer more in-depth Essential Training series, but who may need a short crash course and
00:36overview of what a software application is for and what it can do.

Creating Your First
00:00The Create series features project-based courses designed to give you hands on experience with
00:04software that may be new to you.
00:06Throughout the online training library, you'll find courses like Creating Long Documents
00:10with InDesign, Creating a Sports Highlight Reel with iMovie, Create a Rotating Carousel
00:15with jQuery, Creating an Adaptive Web Site for Multiple Screens, and many more.
00:21Rather than giving you a broad overview of the software product's capabilities, the Create
00:25series focuses on showing you how to use a narrower scope of tools to accomplish specific tasks,
00:30like how to create an image gallery for your portfolio or how to style text and layout
00:34on the web page. The goal of this series is to give you a successful experience for the
00:37project and to teach you the primary purposes of the software.
00:40At the end of a Create tutorial, you'll have a completed project such as a web site or resume
00:45which you can repurpose and use for yourself.

New Features
00:00Our series of New Features courses is aimed to quickly getting you up to speed, whenever
00:04software companies release new versions of their products.
00:07As its name implies, a New Features course focuses primarily on the new additions to
00:12software applications and will often make references to previously existing features
00:16that have been changed or have been removed.
00:18So that being said, New Features courses are intended for people who have more than a passing
00:22familiarity or more intermediate level of skill with the software being covered.
00:26Very little time is devoted to getting you oriented or talking about basic topics like
00:30what the software is for and who it's aimed at.
00:33In addition to seeing how a software application's new features work, a New Features course can
00:37also help you determine whether or not the latest version of the software is worth upgrading to.

Migrating
00:00Our series of Migrating courses is designed to give anyone who's decided to switch or
00:04who is considering switching from one software application to a newer version, or to a similar,
00:09but separate application.
00:10For example, we have courses such as Migrating from Excel 2003 to Excel 2010, or Migrating
00:15from Final cut Pro 7 to Premiere Pro, or Migrating from Joomla! 1.5 to Joomla! 2.5.
00:22Migrating courses are structured to show how to access the features and how to perform
00:25the most common tasks you're familiar with in the previous version of the software, and
00:29then how to access similar or identical features and tasks in the new version.

First Look
00:00First Look courses are designed to give you a look into the current state of important
00:03software or technologies that are either due to be released or in a state of flux.
00:08For example, a course like Windows 8 Consumer Preview First Look offers insight into the
00:12revamped version of the Windows Operating System and some of the key features and changes
00:16you can expect from it.
00:17Other courses in the First Look series include Web Fonts First Look, Google+ First Look,
00:22and Edge First Look.
00:24First Look courses may also be periodically updated as new information becomes available
00:28and might also be replaced with a full Essential Training Course once the technology being
00:32covered is more fully developed.

Foundations and Fundamentals
00:00The Foundations and the Fundamentals series are two separate but similar series.
00:05The courses in these series are designed to help guide you through the exploration of
00:08specific ideas or concepts in a particular subject or area of interest.
00:12A Foundations course explores basic techniques and principles used for a particular content
00:17area or topic, by introducing you to core concepts necessary for you to build your further learning upon.
00:22A Foundations course is for anyone who would like to enhance their skills or build their
00:26expertise in a particular field.
00:27Two examples of Foundation courses are Foundations of Photography: Exposure and Foundations of
00:33Audio: Compression and Dynamic Processing.
00:35A Fundamentals course covers the core concepts you need to know in order to learn new skills
00:40in a particular content area.
00:41These courses take more of a big picture view and cover basic and common terms, processes, and concepts.
00:47For example, if you intend to become a Web Designer but have little to no prior knowledge
00:51in that field, you might want to start with a course like Web Design Fundamentals, which
00:55will give you the concepts and terminology you'll need before moving on to a course covering
00:58specific software, like Dreamweaver CS5: Essential Training.
01:02Other Fundamental courses include Character Animation Fundamentals in 3ds Max and Project Management Fundamentals.

Essential Training
00:00A lynda.com Essential Training Course is a comprehensive entry level overview of a software

00:09These titles cover exactly what a new user needs to know, to get up and running and to
00:12accomplish the most common tasks with the software being taught, in other words all the essentials.
00:17Essential Training Courses give members a foundational overview of a product from a

00:22Who uses it? What are its most common tools, features and workspaces? What is the range
00:27of tasks that people perform using it, and what will someone be able to accomplish once
00:30they complete the course? The course covers the basic tasks, workflows and processes that
00:35a member needs in order to use the product.
00:37You'll learn the tools, terms and techniques required to use the product to perform everyday tasks.

00:10in Essential Training, but it is a substantial topic that deserves additional coverage.

00:06These are the courses you watch if you want to become a Power user.
00:09In order to get the most out of a Power Shortcuts course, you should have already watched the

Projects, Creative Techniques, and Designing
00:00A project course walks you through the steps of creating a specific kind of project, affect
00:04or technique, by deconstructing a best of class project or projects that are inspiring to build.
00:10Rather than covering an A to Z of a subject, a project course instead focuses on building
00:14something in a step-by-step process.
00:17The goal is for you to have an opportunity to practice the skills you might have learned
00:19in an Essential Training or similar course, and to have a project at the end that you

4. Managing Your Training
Creating and managing your playlists
00:00As you browse through lynda.com, you'll probably come across lots of courses you'd like to watch.
00:05You can easily keep track of the ones that interest you by creating playlists, which
00:09let you organize the courses into categories and lists that make sense to you.
00:12Here on the homepage under the playlists tab, I can use this menu to quickly access any
00:17playlists I've previously created.
00:19In addition to the Queue, which is your default playlist, you can create up to nine additional
00:23playlists organized in any way you prefer.
00:25For example, I have a Photography playlist I can select to see the top five courses I've added to it.
00:30I can also go to my courses menu and select playlists, and here in the left sidebar I
00:37can select any of the playlists I've created to see them in their entirety.
00:41So playlists allow me to quickly save and jump to any of these courses to start learning.
00:46To get started with your own playlists, first sign in to your account.
00:49Once you're signed in, you'll see the playlists tab here under my courses.
00:53In this account, I currently have no courses assigned to any playlists.
00:57The playlist button looks like this, and you'll find it almost everywhere a course title is listed.
01:02For example, every course under the Latest releases section on our homepage has a playlist button.
01:06To create your first playlist, just click the button next to any course you want to remember to watch.
01:11This gives you the choices of Queue, add to a new playlist, or go to playlists.
01:17Let's select Queue. The Queue is your default and first playlist.
01:21You can assign any courses you want to your Queue, but this might be a good place to save
01:24courses that you want to get to as soon as possible that just look interesting but don't
01:28fit in any other playlist categories you might have created.
01:31We'll look at creating additional playlists in a moment, but for now, notice that the
01:34course has appeared in the playlist tab under my courses.
01:38It also appears under the my courses menu in the navigation bar.
01:42And again, you'll find the playlists button just about everywhere a course is listed on our site.
01:47If you browse through a library by subject, software or author--for example, I'll choose
01:52Photography, under subject--you'll find the playlist button next to each course here as
01:57well, so I can quickly add several courses that interest me to my Queue from here.
02:05You'll also find the add to playlist button at the top of each individual course page.
02:09So if after reading the description of this particular course I wanted to add this to
02:12my Queue, I could just click the add to playlist button and choose Queue.
02:17You can see the top five items in your playlist at any time by returning to the homepage and
02:22looking under the playlists tab or by rolling your mouse over the my courses menu.
02:27The total number of courses in your playlist is shown here at the bottom of the playlists tab.
02:31You can click view all to see your entire Queue. This is where you manage your playlists.
02:36Some things you can do here include rearranging the playlist by dragging courses up or down,
02:42or click the top button to instantly move a course to the top of the list.
02:46You can also see how far along you've progressed in any of the courses and what their durations are.
02:52To remove a course from a playlist, click the X button.
02:57From here, you can also create additional playlists.
02:59Again, your first playlist is always going to be your Queue, but you're also free to
03:03create up to a total of ten playlists to arrange the course you'd like to watch in any way you like.
03:08Start by clicking create new playlist, give your playlist a name--I'll call this one Photography--and I'll click save.
03:17And now I see the Photography playlist here under playlists in the left column, and because
03:21it's a new playlist, it has zero courses.
03:24But you can easily move courses from one playlist to another simply by dragging them.
03:29These are all photography related courses, so I'll just move them all into my Photography playlist.
03:39And now when I select Photography, I can see the courses I moved there, and I'm free to
03:42arrange them as before.
03:46Notice that leaves me with four courses in my Photography playlist, but now zero in my Queue.
03:51Now if for some reason you want a course to appear in more than one playlist, go to that
03:54course's page by clicking its name, then click the add to playlist button and select any
04:00other playlist you want to add the course to.
04:03Now you can also use this button to create a new playlist rather than going back to the main playlist page.
04:09For example, maybe I want to create a playlist of audio related courses.
04:13I'll go to the subject menu and choose Audio. Maybe I want to start with this course here.
04:19I'll click the playlist button and choose add to a new playlist.
04:23That gives me a field to name the playlist, I'll call it Audio, and click save.
04:29And you can see Audio now appears in that menu, and now it's a simple matter to add
04:35other courses I want to watch to this playlist.
04:38If I go back to my courses menu and choose playlists, I can see it manages all the playlists I've created.
04:51If you want to rename your playlist, click Edit, maybe I'll change Audio to Music and save my changes.
05:00And once you've created more than one playlist, when you return to the homepage, you'll find
05:05a menu under the playlists tab which you can use to select the playlist you want to browse.
05:10We hope you take advantage of your playlists and enjoy using them to keep track of all
05:13the courses you'd like to watch at lynda.com.

Bookmarking videos, chapters, or courses that interest you
00:00As a lynda.com member, you can use the Bookmarks feature to mark any courses, chapters, individual
00:05videos, or even specific parts of videos you find especially important or useful so that
00:10you can easily find them again later.
00:11Let's start with a look at how Bookmarks work.
00:14While logged into your account, roll your mouse over the my Courses menu at the top
00:17of the web page and select bookmarks.
00:20And here you can see some bookmarks I've previously created.
00:23Clicking on the bookmark will take you to that course, chapter, movie or time code.
00:27For example, clicking a movie immediately opens that movie and plays it.
00:32(female speaker: Every ePUB that you are going to sell or distribute should have a cover.)
00:36So now let's take a look at how we create bookmarks by opening a course page.
00:39I will just go back to the Homepage here and pick a course.
00:43Note that the bookmark icon appears below the courses' title by each chapter and by
00:48each individual movie.
00:51To bookmark any one of these items, simply click the bookmark icon.
00:55Notice that bookmark fills in, making it easy to see which items you have marked.
00:59You may be bookmarking items so you can watch them again later, or you can also want a bookmark
01:03unwatched chapters or movies based on their names to remind yourself to watch those movies at a later time.
01:08So adding a bookmark is as simple as clicking the bookmark icon next to an item.
01:11But when browsing through your bookmarks later, you might not remember why you marked a particular chapter or movie.
01:16You can add details to your bookmarks by clicking the arrow next to the bookmark icon, which
01:20opens a Details window.
01:25You can leave the default name of the movie or change the name to something that will
01:28better help you remember why you're bookmarking the movie. I will leave the default name.
01:32In the Description field I might enter something like, "Has good tips on coding shortcuts," or
01:38anything else that will help put the movie in context for me later.
01:41You can use up to 300 characters in the Description field.
01:44We also suggest that you add tags to your bookmarks, which will help you categorize
01:47and locate your bookmark movies later.
01:50You can create your own Tags with each tag separated by spaces, for instance, work and web site.
01:56Now if you are entering a tag that contains more than one word, contained in quotes, for
02:02example, "code hinting." You can also click any of the suggested tags that appear here
02:07below and click Save when you are done.
02:11Notice that movie is now bookmarked as well.
02:14And the process for adding bookmarks to entire courses, chapters, or individual movies is identical.
02:19Just click the arrow next to the bookmark icon and fill in the information.
02:23I will just Cancel that for now.
02:27And the process is the same for all for courses. For instance, I'll go into Business, pick
02:32another course here, and again, we have bookmark icons here under the course title and next
02:37to each chapter in movie.
02:38Now the fourth type of bookmark you can add is a time code bookmark, these are bookmarks
02:42you add while watching a movie.
02:44To take full advantage of time code bookmarks, you need to use any player other than the
02:47QuickTime Standard Player which doesn't have the rich functionality of the other video players.
02:52So you will want to go to the Preferences tab on any course page and choose any other
02:56player other than the QuickTime Standard Player.
02:58Maybe I will choose QuickTime Custom, for example.
03:00And I will go back to my table of contents.
03:02I will start the movie playing (video playing)
03:11So let's say I am about halfway through the movie, and I learn something I want to make
03:14sure I will remember later.
03:16At any point while watching a movie, you can click the time code bookmark button, and that
03:20bookmarks the exact moment you're currently on.
03:23Notice if I move the playhead out of the way that adds a bookmark to the playback scrubber,
03:26so you can see exactly where you placed your time code bookmark, and you can continue adding
03:30time code bookmarks if you come across other information in the same movie that you want to remember.
03:36And there is the second one and even a third one.
03:40Additionally, you can also bookmark the entire movie by clicking the Movie bookmark button here as well.
03:46And that just makes it convenient so you don't have to close the movie and bookmark it from
03:49the course details table of contents page.
03:54To view the bookmarks I just created, I once again go up to my courses and choose bookmarks.
04:00Bookmarks are displayed with the most recently crated bookmarks listed first, so I can see
04:04the bookmarks I just created here at the top of the list. Here are the three time code bookmarks I just created.
04:08So clicking any one of these time codes opens the movie.
04:11And I can see the bookmark icons I placed here. (video playing)
04:18Again time code bookmarks are a great way to remember very specific information in any movie.
04:22Now, while viewing your bookmarks, you can choose between a simple or detailed view of
04:27your bookmarks, with detailed being the default.
04:29Here in Detail view you can see the name of the item you bookmarked, whether it's a course,
04:33chapter, video, or time code, as well as any descriptions or tag you added.
04:37Here is the video I bookmarked and added the description and tags to. Remember I wrote: Has
04:41good tips on coding shortcuts? And here you can see the tags.
04:45Clicking on the tag displays all the bookmarks that share that tag. In this case I just have the one movie.
04:50And you can continue filtering results by clicking additional tags to display all the
04:53movies that have those tags in common, or you can click See all of My Bookmarks to view
04:58all of your bookmarks once again. Similarly, click See all Tags to browse through all of
05:03the tags used in each of your bookmarks.
05:05If you have a great number of tags, you can use the letters to navigate through your tags alphabetically.
05:08I only have a few, so I don't really need to do that here.
05:11And you can go back to your bookmark list again by clicking return to my bookmarks.
05:16Other ways to search through your bookmarks include using the Filter by type menu to display
05:19all types of bookmarks or only courses, chapters, movies, or time codes.
05:25You can also type Search terms into the Search my bookmarks field, and then clicking Search
05:30displays any names, description or tags that contains your search term.
05:33I will clear my search.
05:36Lastly, there may be times when you want to edit your bookmarks, which you can do by clicking
05:39the Edit link next to the bookmark you want to change.
05:43Maybe I want to add a tag here of shortcut, and there it is.
05:49Or you can click Delete to remove a bookmark that's no longer needed or one that you may
05:52have accidentally created.
05:54Just remember that deleting bookmarks can't be undone, so be sure you really want to delete them.
06:00So that's how to work with bookmarks, a great feature for storing and organizing the important
06:04information you learn while watching our training videos.

Starting where you left off with Training History
00:00Anytime you sign back into your lynda.com account, it's easy to pick up where you last left off.
00:05I'll start by logging in, and by default you're taken to the recent activity section
00:11of the site where the recent activity tab is selected, showing you all the movies you
00:15viewed with the most recent items at the top of the list.
00:18From here, you can click on a movie name to launch the movie right from here without even
00:22having to navigate to the course details page first.
00:26(video playing)
00:29You can also click the author's name to see other courses by that author, or click the
00:34course name to go directly to that course page, or the chapter name to go directly to
00:38the course page and be scrolled down to that exact chapter.
00:42So it's really easy to pick up where you last left off.
00:44You can get back to your list of recently viewed movies at any time by going to the
00:47my Courses menu at the top of any page and choosing Course History.
00:51Now the Course History tab just displays the individual courses you recently viewed, rather
00:55than the individual movies, so you can get a broader overview of the range of courses
00:59you've been viewing recently.
01:00But you can click on movie details to see a list of all the movies you've watched in
01:04any of these courses, and you can play them again right from here.
01:07You can return to course history to see the master list again and click on any course
01:11name to go directly to its details page.
01:13You can also always switch back to the recent activity tab from here, if you want to see
01:17all the movies you've watched, regardless of which course they came from.
01:20Also found here is the movie history tab, which lists just the movies and basically
01:24provides you with a more compact version of your recent activity list.
01:27Again, you can click on a movie name to launch the movie directly from here or click the
01:31course name to go to the course's page.
01:33You can also click the column headers to sort the list alphabetically by the movie names,
01:37or I can sort by the course name.
01:40Clicking a header that's already selected reverses the order of the items.
01:45So these are the three areas all designed to help you locate, watch, and review the
01:48courses and movies you've recently viewed.

01:45will display your certificates page to visitors.
01:48Select link banners to my certificates page, if you'd like your web page visitors to see
01:52all of your certificates.
01:53Select, do not disclose certificates page, if you prefer just to display the banners
01:57without linking to your certificates.
02:00Then select and copy the code next to the banner type you'd like to display.
02:04Paste that code onto your web page or blog.
02:06If you chose to link your banner to your certificates page, your visitors will be able to see all
02:10the courses you've completed at lynda.com.
02:15You can repeat this process for each of your Certificates of Completion.
02:18And while you're checking on the status of your Certificates of Completion, you can also
02:22check on the progress of other titles you've watched, but haven't yet completed, by clicking
02:25the in progress tab.
02:27Here you'll find a history of what you've studied on lynda.com even if you've been a
02:31member since our earliest days.
02:32So keep watching videos at lynda.com and start earning those Certificates of Completion.

00:45After accessing lynda.com from public computers or a computer that is not your own, be sure
00:49to click the log out link when you're done.

5. Managing Your Account
Updating your member profile information
00:00In this chapter we'll look at the various options and settings that are available for
00:03you to manage your lynda.com account.
00:05Pretty much everything you need in regards to your account can be found under the my account menu.
00:09Let's start by selecting My Profile.
00:11On this page you can update your Log in information and your Contact information just click edit
00:16next to either section heading.
00:17So, for example, if you want to change your password, click edit next to Log in information.
00:23First enter your current password then type your preferred password into the new password field.
00:27Note that the password has to contain at least six characters and contain at least one number,
00:33then retype the new password in the confirm field, click Save, and as long as your password
00:38conforms to the character requirements, and you type it exactly the same both times, you'll
00:42see the Your account information has been updated message.
00:45The Log in information area is also where you can change your username, although you
00:48probably won't need to do that as often as you might want to change your password, but
00:51you can type in a username of your choice, and then click Save, as long as it's not in
00:55use by another member, your login name will be changed.

Setting your site preferences
00:00Under the my account menu, you'll find the site preferences, and here you'll find the
00:04options for setting your video player preferences.
00:06Now I've covered this information in Chapter 2 in the movie called Choosing the right video
00:10player for your needs, but I've review it here again just in case you jumped to this movie.
00:13So the choice of the Flash, QuickTime Standard and QuickTime Custom are available on both
00:17the Mac and Windows operating systems.
00:20If you're on Windows you'll have the additional choice of Windows Media.
00:23And notice that each player has certain features unique to itself, as well as feature shared
00:26with some or all of the other players.
00:27For example, all of the players support Closed Captioning.
00:30QuickTime Standard is the only one that doesn't support adding bookmarks from within the player
00:34window, and this is the only one that's not compatible with 64-bit Operating Systems.
00:38QuickTime Custom and Windows Media are the only two that allow you to adjust the speed
00:42of playback and Flash is the only player that allows you to increase the size of the video.
00:46Again, the choice is entirely up to you, and you can change your preferences at any time.
00:50If you ever run into trouble playing movies on our site, one thing to try is to switch
00:53players to see if that solves the problem, and if it does, that could indicate there's
00:56something wrong with the plug-in you've been using.
00:58And remember that you can also switch player types from any course page as well.
01:04Just go to the preferences tab and here you can change your site what player preferences.

6. Troubleshooting and Getting Help
Searching FAQs
00:00If you ever run into any difficulties in playing our videos or if you're experiencing any other
00:04problems with our service or with your account, you can start troubleshooting by going to
00:08the support menu and selecting frequently asked questions.
00:12This takes you to our searchable database of common questions and their solutions.
00:16You can either type a search term into this field or choose a category from the Filter
00:19by menu to see a list of questions.
00:21For example, if I were experiencing some playback issues, I might type playback issues into
00:26the search field and click search.
00:29And now I see a short list of questions that might suit my needs.
00:32Maybe I'm using Internet Explorer 8, and I see this question.
00:35"I'm using Internet Explorer 8 and occasionally the pages or movies don't load properly or
00:39I have sporadic playback failures. How do I fix this?"
00:42And clicking on a question shows me the answer.
00:44So in this case I can see suggestions to log out and back into my account, and if that
00:47doesn't work, I can try clearing my browser's cache and cookies, and I'm provided with the
00:51instructions on how to do that.
00:53Some FAQs even have accompanying videos demonstrating the listed steps or solution.
00:57(male speaker: If you're using Internet Explorer 8 and occasionally the pages or movies don't load properly--)
01:04If you're not sure what to type in the search field, you can also try narrowing down the list
01:07of questions using the Category and Sub-Category menus.
01:09I'll just delete that term from my search field, and maybe in this case I'll choose
01:14Technical Help, and you can see that gives me a long list of FAQs.
01:18But I can narrow it down by selecting, say, Movie Playback Issues as a subcategory, and
01:23again, from here I can just click on a question to see the answer.
