There are a couple of less formal approaches to pricing design. Let's discuss the wild-card factors. This can mean the price is based on any number of things. Some of which could be a little bit random. Some factors I've seen designers use are asking the client's budget, gut instinct, cash flow needs, and serendipity. Let's break these down. The first is to ask the client what their budget is, dead simple right? You ask, they tell, you make a deal or you don't. But for whatever reason, I've noticed that clients don't seem to respond to this direct question. I don't know why. Maybe it's because they want to see what figure the designer comes up with, in the hopes of getting a deal. The truth of the matter is that most client companies do have marketing, advertising, and design budgets. And budgets have line items.
