I find it interesting that many clients impose too much control on the creative aspects of the design. When they really should give designers freedom to achieve the project's goals. As a designer or illustrator or photographer, creative is what you do best. You're really good at choosing aesthetic elements, and putting together things in a cohesive and beautiful way. That's your specialty, and you need freedom to do that job well. So, to get more freedom later on in the creative process, I say, give your clients more control in the beginning of the process. Convince them to channel their energy into helping develop a great creative brief, and then trusting you to act on it. We as designers want our clients to provide a lot of input into the creative brief. Clients should spend time helping you gather up all the information required to do the creative brief, and then work with you to hone it down and make it really tight and useful.
