One of the most important and essential steps in creating your resume is incorporating the use of keywords. You may be asking, okay, so what are keywords, and why are they so important? Recruiters search for potential employees the same way you use Google to search for a topic, that is, with one or more words. But instead of using Google, they use an applicant tracking system, or ATS for short, that quickly scans for words matching their criteria.
If the keywords in your resume match the criteria they typed in, voila, you have now won the first round by simply being found. If those keywords are not found, neither are you. Therefore, it is crucial to incorporate these keywords throughout your resume to maximize your chances of being found in a sea of hundreds of thousands of resumes. Keep in mind in larger resume banks, yours may be bobbing amongst millions of other resumes swimming in the same sea.
You can turn the tide in your favor by finding just the right job-specific keywords that will allow the employer to find you. When web site designers create a web site, they add keywords to drive more traffic to their site based on the criteria they think people will be searching by. This is known as search engine optimization, or SEO for short. When you add keywords to your resume, you are using the same principles as web site designers.
Think of adding keywords as SEO for your resume. By adding these keywords, you are optimizing your chances of being found by recruiters and employers. Instead of SEO, or search engine optimization, it's RSO, resume search optimization. I will coin the phrase now. At this point, you may be asking yourself, that's great, I'll use keywords, but how do I know what words they are using to search by so I may include them throughout my resume?
