Video: Building your deck

Female:Each presentation will differ. Each audience will have unique needs and only you know what format will work best for your organization. Since we have been following Katie in her quest to deliver an excellent product to the executive team, let's watch her build some of her key visuals. Katie will be using PowerPoint for her visual deck. You might prefer Keynote or Prezi instead. Regardless, the principles we've talked about so far apply. This is the introduction slide that Katie will share in her presentation.

Building your deck

Female:Each presentation will differ. Each audience will have unique needs and only you know what format will work best for your organization. Since we have been following Katie in her quest to deliver an excellent product to the executive team, let's watch her build some of her key visuals. Katie will be using PowerPoint for her visual deck. You might prefer Keynote or Prezi instead. Regardless, the principles we've talked about so far apply. This is the introduction slide that Katie will share in her presentation.

Notice the KinetEco logo on the top to represent the company connection. This is the slide that people will see when they walk into the room. It describes the presentation theme and the overall tone. When Katie starts speaking, she will show the next slide as she talks about the need for KinetEco to enter Brazil, and she will continue talking a little bit about Brazil being the 8th largest world economy and the country that has the 16th largest coastline. This is obviously important to a company like KinetEco.

In her presentation Katie will preview her main points of building connections, building relationships because again, the focus is creating and building credibility in Brazil, and building patience is what Katie will reveal in her research. This next slide talks about connections, her first point. Among the several pieces of data Katie will talk about is Geert Hofstede's research. You can see the agenda at the bottom and right now I'm talking about the first point in the lineup.

Katie will talk about Geert Hofstede being the cultural researcher and psychologist who studies the theory of Uncertainty Avoidance. He describes it as being a degree to which members of a society feel uncomfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity. She needs to set this up because the information she will share next is the high level of ambiguity avoidance that Brazil has especially as it relates to the United States. Katie will show that because of the high score in this dimension, Brazilians as a whole come across as passionate.

They show emotion. They have open body language, and they enjoy making connections. Personal connections are very important. This is also the time for Katie to mention the researcher that's on staff of KinetEco Labs, Alex Lopes. He can be the person to help make a lot of introductions for the company in this new country. This next slide talks about relationships and as part of her information Katie will talk about the regional and local trade shows that KinetEco needs to participate in because that's where a lot of the relationships can be built.

As a visual, an example of the Solar Power International Conference that happened in Brazil is a good idea. In this same slide she'll talk a little more about the American Embassy's recommendation for the Gold Key Service, a service that shares names of preapproved vendors and suppliers. In the third and final point, some of the evidence is talking about patience and the need to build it. A lot more information will come from the United States' Doing Business in Brazil Report.

This is a report Katie will mention as based on 10 specific indicators and factors for doing business overseas. Then she'll show how Brazil ranks 116th out of 189 countries in the report. This is an important factor because it's crucial to know that it relates to having patience when doing business in Brazil. Katie will animate and show other countries in the region making this information more relevant. Overall, Katie is going to finish with a template that talks about harnessing wind and sun for a cleaner tomorrow which is KinetEco's logo.

Katie will again mention Brazil's coastline and review the 3 main points that she discussed so far in her information, building connections, relationships, and patience. This would be the final slide if Katie had wrapped with something like this where she changes the motto at the bottom and talks about harnessing Brazilian wind and sun for a cleaner tomorrow and building relationships in Brazil. The final slide I mentioned in this course is the Q & A slide where Katie can talk about questions the audience may have.

As you can see, Katie can show the main introduction slide title that references The Economist report about Brazil being South America's Tiger. I hope that Katie's realistic example clearly showed you the importance of relevant design, clear organization, logic, and images that bring your points to life. And a set of Q & A slides that show that you're ready and prepared to discuss your topic in depth. Now it's your turn to sketch and build your own visuals.

Check out Part 2 of the visuals design worksheet to help you along the way.
