So let's begin a new document. File > New > Document. We want eight pages. Now, of course, newsletters come in many different shapes and sizes. Ours is going to be US letter size. We do want Facing Pages checked. We don't want a Master Text Frame because we are going to be drawing our own text frame that's going to give us much more control over those text frames. Currently, my default unit of measurement is Picas. That may be the case with you. If not, bear in mind that you can input your measurements using any of InDesign's supported measurement systems, just so long as you are specific.
So, for example, what I mean by that is when we come to the Margins, I actually want a 36 point, which is the same as 3 pica as it turns out, a 36 pt margin. If I type in 36 pt and then I'll press the Tab key, that will convert to its pica equivalent. And because I have my unbroken chain here, all settings remain the same. In actual fact, I want the bottom margin to be bigger because the bottom margin is going to accommodate our footer. So at this point, I'm going to click on that chain to break it so that I can set the bottom margin independently and typing 48 pt.
Now in the case of this newsletter, we are not using any Bleeds. We have no elements that go up to the edge of the page. So the Bleed and the Slug can both remain at 0. The Slug is an area outside of the page in which you can put any kind of internal reference information but I don't think we need that. Oh! One more thing, we need three columns. Three columns with a 1 pica Gutter. The Gutter being the space between those columns.
