Bootstrap is a front-end framework created by a designer and developer at Twitter to streamline building websites. Front-end refers to the client side of a website. That's the part of a website that's displayed in the browser window. A framework is a bunch of code that's been written for you already, which you can use to build your website. You can find Twitter Bootstrap at getbootstrap.com. Pre-written code, that sounds like a terrible idea, doesn't it? It sounds like you can't adapt it, you can't make it match your Fireworks or your Photoshop design, you have to stick with what you're given.
A site built with Bootstrap must be immediately recognizable like the default WordPress, Joomla!, or Drupal templates and themes are instantly recognizable. Fortunately, that's not true. Think of Bootstrap as a productivity tool for building websites quickly and easily. Bootstrap supports both adaptive layouts and responsive design, depending on which type of grid you choose. You can also pull out the responsive elements and build a standard website, if you prefer that. If you're not a designer, you'll love how many elements of the web page are designed for you plainly and simply, so you can make a reasonable looking website quickly without worrying about all of the design details.
You can find examples of websites built with Bootstrap at builtwithbootstrap.com. Next, let's download Bootstrap and examine its file structure.
