Downloading and unzipping Bootstrap 3

So, this is the website for Bootstrap. The official website is at getbootstrap.com. And everything you ever wanted to know about Bootstrap is somewhere on this website. This is where you can download Bootstrap. Where you can read all of the documentation about Bootstrap and customize things and so forth. It's all somewhere here on this website. So the first thing we need to do to get started working with Bootstrap is of course to download it. And how do we download it? Well there's a big honking button on the homepage that says download Bootstrap.

We're going to click that and download a copy of the files. It is worth noting, before I go ahead and click that button and actually download the files; that there is the ability up here in the top navigation for customization. And I'm just going to show you this very, very briefly and mention that it's here. This is a way that you can customize exactly what you're downloading with Bootstrap including the LESS files. LESS refers to the CSS pre-processor that's used for customizing Bootstrap's style sheets. It's beyond the scope of this course, but it's here for those of you who are familiar with LESS.

There's ways that you can either download all the JQuery plug-ins or one of the JQuery plug-ins and so forth. You can customize some of the colors and things here inside of Bootstrap as I continue to scroll down the page. This goes on for quite a ways. And then, finally, once you've customized all these various things, you can compile Bootstrap and download your own copy. Now, that works great. If you're going to download Bootstrap one time. And you're only going to download it one time. If you do wind up customizing any of the colors and things here under this LESS variables section.

Be aware that Bootstrap is going to generate a custom style sheet for you that's going to be used in your Bootstrap files. And if you ever want to download Bootstrap again, you're going to need to make sure that you customize all those variables exactly the same way as you did this time around. So for that reason I tend to think using the customization screen is not necessarily the best way to go. You may really want to get to know the last inserted Bootstrap and customize those variables there through that process.

Otherwise you need to make very very careful notes about what you changed here. Now again, that's all fairly advanced stuff, and for those of you who are curious as to whether you can make Bootstrap's file size smaller, this is how you would do it. You would come here to the customization screen. But, because we are just going to start right from the beginning with Bootstrap, we want to get absolutely everything that's possible for Bootstrap. We want all of the JavaScript. We want all the style sheets. We want everything. And to do that, it's very, very simple. We just click the button here that says download Bootstrap.

This is going to go ahead and download a zipped file for this recording, I'm working with Bootstrap. Version 3.0.0, the very, very first release of Bootstrap. As you're watching this video, it's likely that Bootstrap has updated a little bit. The process should be the same. Generally speaking, Bootstrap will be fixing a few bugs. They may be adding a few features here or there but it's mostly fixing bugs along the way. So I'm going to go ahead and open the ZIP file as I download it, and this is a copy of Bootstrap here, and it's a little bit complicated looking, particularly in this very first version of Bootstrap.

When we downloaded version two, it was very, very simple. Version three, they're distributing absolutely everything here with Bootstrap. Including all of the documentation, and a bunch of other things. So there's only one part of this that we really need. And that is, inside of the DIST folder. DIST as in distribution. If you double click on that, this is the heart of Bootstrap right here. And this is all you need to work with Bootstrap. All of that other stuff that comes with the download is documentation, and LESS files, and a whole bunch of other things that are just well beyond what we need for an up and running course.

So, what I'm going to do here is, I'm going to make a folder on my desktop, and this folder is going to be called bootstrap. Inside of this folder on my desktop called Bootstrap, I'm going to go ahead and open that. Now what I'm going to do is, from the zip file that I downloaded from that DIST, the distribution folder, I'm just going to highlight the three files, or the three folders that are here. And I'm just going to copy them over to my Bootstrap folder, and as for the rest of that ZIP and all the other stuff that's in there, we don't need it.

You can go ahead and throw that out. In the next video I'm going to walk you through what exactly we just downloaded here from that Bootstrap site, and we'll put together our first HTML page using Bootstrap.
