Video: Ordering your book

After you have finished making your book, odds are that you're going to want one or more printed copies of your book. Blurb doesn't keep printed copies of your book lying around. It prints each book on demand if and when it receives an order, either from you, from your friends privately, or from the public Blurb bookstore. In this movie, I'll cover how you can order your own book. Remember that up till now you haven't paid Blurb anything. The process of making a Blurb book is without charge. It's only if you order your book that your money changes hands. Ordering is done online at Blurb's website. I've logged into my Blurb account and from here, I'll head to a list of my books by choosing Your Blurb and Your Books.

Ordering your book

This list includes all the books that I've made that are still on Blurb servers. If I made a book with BookSmart, like this one, or a page layout program like InDesign, it will remain on this list for at least 15 days after I upload it to Blurb. At least one copy has to be ordered by me, or by someone privately, within those 15 days or the book will be removed from Blurb servers to make room for the many other books that Blurb receives from other people. That isn't the end of the world because I'm careful to keep my book files on my computer and I could always re-upload the book to Blurb.

If I made a book with Bookify, like this one, the 15 day rule is slightly different. Within 15 days, the book either has to be ordered or I have to have edited it in Bookify, which signals Blurb that I'm still working on it. If I don't meet this 15 day rule, my Bookify book will be gone, because it's created online and there is no copy on my computer. Notice that on this list there are also some intermediate iterations of a book I was working in Bookify. These are the ones that Bookify saves automatically from time to time, and these are marked In Progress.

So, I'm going to go to the top of this list. This is the book that I want to order today. It's one that I created with Bookify. It's a final version with some different designs and a different cover of the book I was using as an example in the chapter on Bookify in this course. To order this book I'll click the Order Book button. That takes me to this page where I see an order form on the right. Here, I can order any quantity of my book that I want, but if I do plan to make a volume order eventually, it's a very good idea to order just one book first, so I can make sure that everything in the book is A-OK. Having a printed copy in hand is really the only way to know how a book is going to look trimmed and bound.

Remember that Blurb doesn't offer a free proof book. Even though I'm paying for it, I'm going to treat my first copy like a proof book. If I see something in it that I want to change, I'll edit the book and upload another version of the book. Or, if it's a Bookify book, I'll edit the book online. I strongly recommend that you read through blurb's return policy, so you understand what Blurb considers your responsibility in terms of the design and appearance of your book. Here, I can choose the cover type with which this copy of my book will be printed. I'm going to choose Hardcover, Dust Jacket and I want just one copy of that cover type.

Here, I can opt to upgrade to Blurb's premium paper. As you can see, this is a heavier paper and so I like it for photographs. I can choose from two different finishes of premium paper. I'm going to opt for the Lustre finish. And of course opting for the premium paper will affect the price of my book. If I click this button, Upgrade To Pro, I see options for other upgrades, upgrades to the ProLine materials, a special, high quality line of papers and end sheets and linen covered cases.

There are different combinations of these materials available, depending on the cover type that I choose for this copy of my book. These are definitely worth exploring, but I'm just going to go back to the regular order form for now by clicking Close. Now I'll click Add To Cart,. and from here its relatively straightforward to work through the checkout process, choosing shipping options and entering payment information. And then shortly comes the most exciting part, which is getting a printed copy of my book in my hands.
