Creating Photo Books with Blurb presents three separate workflows for creating and publishing books that showcase photographs using the Blurb self-publishing service. The course starts with an exploration of photo bookmaking in BookSmart, Blurb's free desktop software, then shows how to make a simple photo book in Bookify, Blurb's online bookmaking service. The course also covers Blurb's PDF to Book plug-in for use with custom books created in Adobe InDesign, as well as information on ordering copies of photo books and selling them in the Blurb online bookstore.
If you want your Blurb Book to reach a wider audience than just your personal friends and networks and you want the chance to possibly make a little money from your book, you can add it to the Blurb online bookstore. The Blurb Bookstore that you see here has thousands of titles, and it's growing. And photo books are among the most popular books on the bookstore. Everything from Arts & Photography books, to Travel books, Wedding books, Fine Art Photography books, and Portfolios. So how do you get your book up on the Blurb Bookstore for sale? I'm singed in to my Blurb account and I'm on the page that shows me a list of all the books that I've been working on and are active at Blurb.
I'm going to scroll down here to find a book of Instagram iPhone photos that I would like to put up on the Blurb Bookstore. Notice over here that this book is still Private. It's not on the Bookstore. I am allowing a preview and I've gone ahead and ordered one copy of this book myself and that's why it says Order More here. To add this book to the Bookstore, I just have to switch it from Private to Public status. To do that, I'll go to the Details page for the book by clicking Details. On the Details page I'll click Edit Book Settings and then I'll scroll down.
And I'll go to the Privacy Settings and I'll change that setting from Private to Public. Then I'll come down here and I'll decide what cover formats and paper types I want the book to be available in. For example, if I want the paper for the Softcover version to be different than the Standard Paper, I can click here and choose Premium or Matte Paper. Or I can go down to Upgrade to Pro, select Softcover, and I'll come here and I'll choose the ProLine Uncoated paper, which I think is going to look really good with these funky Instagram photos in this book.
I'll click Add Option, and I could do the same for these other cover types. I'll just leave that for now. Notice that I have another column here, Your Profit. I have this column because I've already enrolled in Blurb's Set your Price program. First, the idea of the set your price program is that you can mark up your book above the base price that Blurb charges you to buy your own copies of the book. And the difference, Your Profit, goes to you. Now the amount of the profit on each book really is your own decision. I suggest that you take a look at other books in the Bookstore in the photo categories that are similar to yours and check out their page count, their materials, their content, and use their retail price as a guide.
For the Softcover, I might make the profit something like $4.00 and I'll leave the others as is for now. Now I'm going to come down and click Save Changes. That's really important. And I'm done. My book is now Public and available for sale in the Blurb Bookstore. If I come up here, I can see that my price for the Softcover book is $13.95. If I want to buy more copies, the price at which this book will be for sale in the store is $21.43. That includes the upgraded paper and the tax.
Now I mentioned that I had already signed up for the Set Your Price program, I did that by going to Books & Pricing and choosing Set Your Price. I clicked Enroll and I entered some payment and tax information, and that's all there is to it. My book is now in the Blurb Bookstore. If I go to the Search field in the Bookstore and I type the title of my book, it should come up, and there it is. If I click on this link, I'll see what anybody will see who finds my book in the Bookstore.
They will be able to preview the book, they will be able to add comments if they're registered members of Blurb, and if they're so inclined, they will be able to purchase the book in any of the cover types that I've made available. I can tell you, it feels really good to see my book here in the Bookstore. I hope you're looking forward to the same good feeling when you publish your book.
