An email address is the most valuable asset a fan can give to an artist. This is a bold statement, but one that continues to hold true. Fans that have given you their email addresses are more likely to support you in your musical career. Email addresses imply a deeper connection than a like on Facebook, or a follow on Twitter. While these fans might not open every email you send them, data shows that they purchase music, and merchandise more often than fans on the various social media outlets. The best way to get an email address is at a live show. Getting their address in person makes the relationship with the fan more real. The second best way is to exchange a song or other item for their address using an email for media widget. Sites we've discussed like Topspin, Band-cap, and Reverbnation have widgets like this where fans enter their emails to receive a free song or another item.
