Learning GIS (geographical information systems) requires training in cartography, database management, and spatial analysis. But once you've built a solid foundation in the basics, how do you approach GIS challenges in the real world? Dr. Jason VanHorn is here to help you master practical GIS scenarios, and answers the 7 most common questions he receives from other GIS professionals, including: Where can I get quality data? How do I create projections? What's an inexpensive solution for collecting geospatial data? and Where can I find a GIS job?

Topics include:
  • Exploring GIS trends
  • Accessing data in proprietary and catalog formats
  • Understanding GIS data formats
  • Working with scale and graticules in projections
  • Collecting geospatial data
  • Building a GIS project from scratch
  • Mastering GIS job interviews

Portals for GIS jobs

Now let's talk about jobs. Among all the jobs you should think about for GIS are jobs that are particular to your geography, or to the place where you want to be. Public jobs at the government level are often only advertised at the county, or the city level, and you should inquire with your county or local government for those types of jobs in GIS. Private jobs are usually advertised in GIS job portals. Ever increasingly, I have compiled a list of portals that I recommend to my students when advising them.

And you can find that here, at On this page, you can see different job portals related to the GIS industry, with all the links. Also notice on the right, there're career links. So if you’re interested in general careers in these types of areas, you can check those out. Certainly I encourage you to make connections with people, because many jobs that my students are able to get, occur because of networking. However, employers are utilizing these services to find potential employees in GIS.

There's one particular site I want to show right now. And that's the USA Jobs site. Notice here, you can type in keywords. This site highlights federal jobs. In this case, let's type GIS and see how many there are. When I search for GIS, it looks like there are 54 results. They're constantly updated, and you can use this kind of a website to apply for federal GIS jobs. So whether you are new or old to the GIS scene, I'm sure you'll find the careers page that I've built helpful to find a job in GIS.
