As you consider next steps in learning more about GIS and its applications in the real world, let me recommend two things. First, more education is one approach. There are many GIS graduate programs, and many excellent options online. I would look for options that fit your schedule and price tag. Often professional programs in GIS result in significant promotion. So the amount that you initially spend on education will often be recovered with your new position. Secondly, I would recommend the ESRI User Conference during the summer. Or participation in specific GIS Summits that ESRI puts on.
