Understand why After Effects has three bit depths

In this lesson we'll look at the purpose of 32-bit HDR, and we're going to look at it this time in terms of potential. Because part of the role of 32-bit is to hold all of the potential that could be there in any image, but frankly, usually is not. To do this, we're going to use three simple ingredients, a gradient ramp, a levels effects, and the Info panel. Now, this gradient may appear banded to you because it is very difficult to present this in any compressed form without introducing banding. The first thing I'm going to do, just to review, is knock this project down to eight bits per channel, and increase the contrast dramatically in the image. This is something you may have seen me do already, so this is just a review. If I zoom in, you can clearly see the ugly banding in the center of the image. Eight bits per channel is the same color space as your monitor unless you have a very fancy monitor. It's capable of presenting images without looking like this, but when you work this…
