Understand lens distortion

Lens distortion is present in an awful lot of shots taken with an actual physical camera and a curved lens, which most of them are. It's especially apparent in a shot like this, an extreme wide angle, like a fisheye. In this case, taken on a GoPro Hero 3. In this lesson, I'll show you how to measure and match this type of lens distortion right in After Effects using the Optics Compensation plugin. So, without further ado, let's see what the Optics Compensation effect does. I'll apply it here, and if I raise field of view right away, you'll see that in fact, it's making what was some pretty extreme fish eye distortion more extreme. However, if I check Reverse Lens Distortion, it actually undoes the effect of a fisheye lens. Now, let's say that my goal is to actually to flatten this shot out.
