In this installment of Mograph Techniques, Ian Robinson shows you how to model and animate a stylized 3D flower that grows and blooms over time, using the combined power of CINEMA 4D and Adobe After Effects. You'll start by creating a single flower petal with traditional polygonal modeling techniques. Then you'll load the petal into a cloner object, and nest that cloner inside another, resulting in a complete flower with multiple levels of control for animation. The second phase is animating the cloners and refining the animation with the Step Effector. In the third and final phase, you'll bring the project into After Effects to add animated color effects, transitions, text, and shadows.

Topics include:
  • Modeling flower petals in C4D
  • Creating shaded materials in C4D
  • Building flowers with multiple cloner objects
  • Building a dynamic transition with camera animation
  • Multipass Rendering out of CINEMA 4D
  • Adding and animating color effects in After Effects
  • Refining transitions
  • Rendering the final composite

Setting up the project in CINEMA 4D

So throughout this course we're going to be working at a set resolution of 1280 by 720. So, when we first create our Cinema 4D project, we want to make sure that the project is, of course with the proper settings. So let's go up to our Render Settings button here on the top center part of the interface and click on the flyout button under Output. Under Film and Video, I want you to make sure that you choose the HDV/HDTV 720/25 setting. Now, just because I like to work at more of a film frame rate, I'll change that frame rate from 25 to 24.

And that's pretty much it for our render settings. So I can go ahead and close this window. And then you want to make sure that you have your project settings set up. So I'm going to go ahead and just make the attributes of this a little bit larger. But if you don't have this Project panel, you want to go up under the Edit menu and go to your Project settings. That will open up the project settings right over here. Now since we set the project to render at 24 frames a second, I want to make sure my timeline is set up at 24 frames a second. So, let's go here, and change this value from 30, to 24.

And then for the maximum time in the project, I want to change that to 120 frames. That way it will be a full five seconds of animation. Now, this is how the project is going to be setup for the rest of the course. So, if you're following along, you want to make sure to work at this resolution. So you can kind of match where everything is on the screen.
