When I say "listening to imagine," what I'm really referring to is the process I go through when I listen to music. I try and visualize what might be happening in the scene. Now, sound designers do this all the time, but in reverse; they will look at something and come up with the sounds that might make sense for what they're seeing on screen. Now I'm sure since most of you're a creative-type folk, you're not foreign to the idea of using your imagination to help create your projects. Understand, just like drawing, to some of you this process might come naturally, but for others it might take a little training, or a little getting used to.
So let's check out our project here. First thing I want to do make sure the playhead is all the way at the beginning of the comp, and let's just create an audio preview. Press period on your keyboard to listen to the comp. (music playing) Now, I know it sounds kind of repetitive, but I thought that was sort of fun, and I loved the crackle that starts in the beginning.
So the first thing I did is listen to music, and I just thought to myself, "What color does that make me think of?" and I thought that made me think of this ridiculously bright green color, so I went go ahead and just dropped a green solid in there. Now when the music kicked in with that crackling noise, another thing I did is went back and added another layer to signify that noise coming in. To signify the repetition, I wanted to create a graphic element that sort of kept repeating.
So, let's go ahead and turn on layer 3 here, and you can see I have this oval graphic. So I'm going to a load up a RAM preview here, so you can see where I started when I actually started the creative process. (video playing) So, you get the idea. It's just spinning repetitively, and the noise in the graphic is emulating the noise from the audio.
Now, there are some other cues that pop up in the song that I wanted to go ahead and accentuate, and I did that just by adding some more graphic elements. So let's go ahead and turn the visibility on on the rest of all the other layers, move our play ahead back to the beginning, and we'll checkout the RAM preview from that point. (video playing) So obviously, you could keep going and keep going.
As more instruments get added to the scene, keep adding more graphic elements to the scene. The whole point of this exercise is to just listen to some music and use that to inspire your creativity. So, I encourage you, again; work with the project and exercise your mind.
