Video: Introducing visual effects features

After Effects CS6 also includes several significant new visual effects features. The biggest is something called a 3D Camera Tracker. This allows you to bring in already-shot footage where camera has been walked, dollied, or flown through a scene, and After Effects can analyze it and extract where the camera was, how it moved, its angle of view, and also where other surfaces were in that scene, such as walls, floors, the sides of buildings, et cetera. This allows you to integrate 3D objects into already-shot 2D footage. Very cool, for visual effects and for motion graphics.

In addition to that, there is a new Rolling Shutter Repair effect. Quite often when you shoot with DSLRs or similar cameras and the camera moves quick, things seem to lean. You get what's called a Jello-Cam effect. Well, there is a plug-in now to help fix some of those cases. Another big feature, variable-width feathering. We have been asking for this for ages. We can now change the width of the feather along a mask path, a very welcome new addition. And finally, for those who do use mocha's 2D Planar Tracker, it's better integrated into After Effects.

You no longer access it as a separate program; you could launch it directly inside After Effects, and it brings in new trim points from your composition. Another nice little addition. So let's go play with these.
