Intimidated by 3D modeling packages? Dip a toe in the water with CINEMA 4D (C4D) Lite, a slimmed down version of CINEMA 4D included with After Effects CC. In After Effects if we want to import something into a project we generally use the term import. In Cinema 4D we generally use the term merge. And if you want to import an object You use the objects manager, over here. Now we're in a untitled Cinema 4D file, or a new Cinema 4D file, so, when you're in Cinema 4D Lite, just go to File > New, Cinema 4D, and you will create a new file.
Once your in there if you go to the object manager and go to File Merge Objects, this is how we bring a file in. Now most people think they will go to main file menu and import things here. You'll get stuck if you do that because you can't do it, it's in here File Merge Objects. So just remember when you're importing things that comes into the objects manager because essentially. You're importing an object. So merge objects and then I'm going to go into the footage folder within the project files folder and select gear text.ai and its never straight or eight document and when I do it will ask me whether I want to scale it up or down.
We're going to leave it with the default settings and click okay. And you'll see the text now appears in the center of the scene. And that's because we took time to center the object on the art board in illustrator before bringing it in. Now in order to give it depth, we need to add an extrude nerb so we're going to do that now. Add a extrude nerb. Now the weird thing about Illustrator text is, when you drag the text onto the extrude nerb, you won't actually see the extrusion. Because what you need to do is you need to select the extrude nerb.
And come down here to the bottom, and click on this box, hierarchical. Basically, Cinema 4D sees this as several different shapes. So by clicking on this, it will apply the extrude nerb to all of those individual shapes giving us the result we would expect. It catches me out every time I think. Oh no the extrude nerb is not working. But basically just make sure that down in the object manager that you have hierarchials selected otherwise it won't work. Just like with any other object I can increase the depth, I can go to Caps and add a Fillet Cap.
Now we've all sorts of options for the fillit cap, we've had to look at radius already and we can bring the radius down to maybe a value of two. You also have Fillet types so at the moment we've got a convex one. I'm going to put it in Concave Fillet Cap and just show you the difference between the two. Actually I'm going to choose an engraved fillit cap and if I just increase the radius a little bit. You can see what that does, it gives a kind of raised edge, which I quite like here. So, we've got a raised edge, we could do the back as well, I don't really need to so I'm just going to stick with that, and I'm going to quickly render it.
Now, if you don't want to render the whole scene, you can create an interactive render region, by coming down here in the render button and clicking interactive render region. And it will just render the region within this box. You've got quality slider there as well, so if you're want to increase the quality you can drag the quality up to see it rendered in better quality. Now one thing you can do just to add a little bit of strangeness to the object you're creating is to animate some of these properties.
So I could animate say the Radius value, so Cmd or Ctrl on Windows. Click on Radius and that creates a key frame at the beginning for the radius value. Okay and then if I move to maybe here and bring the radius value and we're seeing it update of course because we've gotten the intractive region. We'll take that down as far as it'll go to zero. And key frame it again. And then go to the end and back up to three.
And we'll see how that looks in After Effects once that's rendered. Okay, so you can animate any of these properties for the extrude nerb. As well as animating properties for the text itself. And we'll have a look at animating text a little bit later. But that's a few ideas about how you can bring in illustrator text. Add and extrude nerb and think about animating the different properties of that extrude nerb. In the next movie, we're going to have a look at applying materials to the text just to make it stand out a little bit better.
