CINEMA 4D: Rendering Motion Graphics for After Effects demonstrates how to take a simple logo animation in CINEMA 4D and transform it into a compelling motion graphic with After Effects, incorporating two distinct visual styles. Starting with a prebuilt animation rendered from CINEMA 4D, author Rob Garrott employs industry-standard techniques, utilizing materials, lights, and the library of effects in After Effects, to enhance the project's look and feel. The foundation of our stadium is almost complete. The last thing we want to worry about is the stadium lights and the pulses of energy that are actually traveling through the tubes. Both of these are going to be created using essentially the same technique, just with slightly different variations on the effect that we applied to them. So what I want to do is I am going to go into the Project folder and in the Video subfolder in the Stadium/ Special Passes folder, I am going to grab object buffer number 3. This is the object buffer that has our stadium lights in it. So I am going to drag that in and put it right above the Stadium Base Pre layer that we've got in here.
And when I do that, it obliterates everything below and that's because this is just a black and white layer that shows us the lights themselves. This was an object buffer that we set up in CINEMA 4D. We're going to use this as the basis for another glow effect. So I am going to go to the Effects menu and going under Trapcode and add in Starglow. You can see that Starglow gives me that 1972 thing going on with those big streaks. So I want to do a couple of things. First thing I want to do is change the color. So I am going to go to the Presets in this Starglow and change it to White Star.
I just want my stadium lights to be white. The next thing I am going to do is dial down the Streak Length. I don't want them to be really long. I want to bring it down to about 3 or so. So that gives them a nice bright feel but doesn't make that Starglow effect really feel overwhelming. Then I am going to dial down the Source Opacity because I want just the glow. I don't want the black and white background. So if I dial down the Source Opacity, now I end up with just those glows sitting on top of everything and you can see it really makes those things look hot.
And I'll just turn that layer off, so you can see what it looked like before. Now we've got nice bright lights in the background. The next thing we want to do is add some pulses that are going to be pumping energy into the platform. And those are the little elements that we see inside the tubes down here below the platform. We have an object buffer for those as well and we're going to use a very similar technique. So let's go ahead and go to the Project window and that's object buffer number 4. If I bring in object buffer number 4, I am going to bring that and put it right above this layer here, the Glow Reveal.
So it's below the Stadium Base and above the Glow Reveal. You can see there is my white object buffer. I want to use this as the basis for glow again. So I am going to go back to Effects > Starglow and that's going to give me that same disco feel, and I am going to start off by dialing down the Source Opacity this time so I don't have to look at the black background anymore. Then I am going to dial down the Streak Length. So I've got just a little bit. 3. Now, let's change the color.
If we go to Colormap A and B, I'll twirl them both open. We want them both to be Fire. Here we go. You can see now I have a well-defined pulse of energy traveling through those tubes. I am going to set the blending mode for this though to Add and see how that does. I may not like it. Now, a lot of times when I am working, I'll shift the blending mode suddenly and I go, yeah, that looks cool. Maybe it doesn't, and so I always try it though just to see while things happen. That's beautiful thing about After Effects is it's nondestructive.
So if I don't like it, I can always just go backwards. So I'll hit that on Add, and you know what? I actually kind of like that because that really helps to seat the pulses into the scene. Before it felt like they were kind of sitting on top and now it feels like that energy is right inside those tubes. So as I look at these pulses now I want to scrub backwards in time and see when they come on because remember the pulses aren't there all the time. I want them to reveal with the energy tubes. So if I go backwards in time, I am going to scrub just to about frame... yeah, there we go! So right where the rest of my tubes start in.
What I am going to do is rather than go through the whole setup of having these things reveal with a mask layer, I am just going to turn them up in intensity. So if I go to the Opacity of that layer, I'll select the layer and hit T on the keyboard to bring up Opacity. I am going to set a keyframe for 100% right around frame, I don't know, 23 or so. I am going to set that keyframe and then back up in time about maybe 6 frames or so. There we go! That's not so bad, around frame 17.
I'll dial that down to 0. So now what happens is as I scrub forward in time, those guys come on. They sort of lead the energy in the tubes into the platform. The energy in our stadium is really finally looking fantastic. We've taken a drab CINEMA 4D render and turned it into something amazing, all with a few very simple techniques.
