After Effects Apprentice 06: Type and Music
Video Duration: 0s 3h 48m Beginner Updated Nov 20, 2012

View Course Description

One of the cornerstones of motion graphics is creating and animating type. In this course, Trish Meyer shows how to typeset titles professionally and create custom animations, as well as apply and modify the hundreds of text animation presets that After Effects ships with. Additionally, Chris Meyer shows how to add audio to projects, including spotting "hit points" to align keyframes and video action.

The After Effects Apprentice videos on were created by Trish and Chris Meyer and are designed to be used on their own and as a companion to their book After Effects Apprentice. We are honored to host these tutorials in the Online Training Library®.

Topics include:
  • The core text animation recipes
  • Animating text along a path
  • Working with text animation presets
  • Timing animation to audio
  • Per-character 3D type
  • Rendering with an alpha channel
  • Making Photoshop type editable in After Effects
  • Professional typesetting tips
After Effects

Hi! I am Trish Meyer of Crish Design. In this lesson, I am going to cover the After Effects text engine. It's powerful but not always intuitive, so I'll start with the basics of how selectors work and then build up your skills over a series of exercises. You'll learn all about text animators, including using shapes, animating text along a curve, and using per-character 3D to fly type around in 3D space. I'll also show you how to apply text animation presets.

But I hope that by the end of this lesson you'll be empowered to create your own custom text animations, and then you can save those as presets. Of course, title design involves more than just animation. You also have to create professional-looking titles. So if you need some help with those curly quotes, don't miss the movies at the very end. Now although this lesson is primarily involved with text animation, I'll also cover a couple of other topics, including separating fields and rendering with an alpha channel.

And during the intermission, Chris will show you how to add all that your project and then time your animation to the music. So let's get started. In the first chapter, I do have to cover the basics, but I promise after that, we'll have fun with text animators.
