Promethean interactive whiteboards bring the immediacy of touch to your teaching. Learn the tools and best practices for using one in your classroom, in this course from author and educator Aaron Quigley. Aaron shows how to set up your Promethean board; download ActivInspire, the software that drives Promethean boards; and get started creating new presentations that include video, quizzes, and annotations. He'll also focus on teaching methods that get your students actively involved with the Promethean board, and offer challenges along the way to test their skills.
While this challenge seems fairly straightforward, there's a few tricky steps to make sure that we can access the camera from the desktop annotation as well access the pen while we're recording. Let's go and get started by turning on desktop annotation. I'm going to select the desktop annotated icon in my toolbox. Here you can see that the main Promethean window's going away, and I only have the page browser and the toolbox still open. I'm going to clean up the screen even further by turning off the page browser. Now, here's where the first problem comes in. At this point, most people would like to go to the top navigation, choose tools, and select the camera, but you notice that our top menu is no longer there.
Also, if I take a look at the toolbox I don't see a camera option in this particular toolbox. The reason being is we need to turn on the desktop tools. The desktop tools are directly next to the desktop annotate icon. The desktop tools create a small circular area that I can drag around the desktop. And here, I can access some of the tools that were originally located in the top menu, such as my screen recorder. I can also choose an area screen recorder, or a full screen recorder. I'm going to go and select the area screen recorder. And then using my cursor, I'm going to drag out the area that I'd like to record.
Now that I've highlighted just the webpage I am going to click launch recorder. Now I have my recorder window open and I am ready to press the record button. Again, I am going to move this off of the webpage so that it is not part of the recording I am about to make. Now if I press record right now I could go ahead and record this webpage and talk about it but what I don't have the ability to do is to draw on the webpage, I'd like to figure out how to get my pen back. The way that we do that, is we actually have to turn Desktop Tools back off. So, I'm going to select the Desktop Tools, I'm going to come up to Return to Flipcharts, and you can see that my regular toolbox is now on the right hand side.
So here I can now select the pen as well as colors. However, with the pen selected, I'm not able to start my recording. So this is going to be a multiple step process. The first step is to use the Select tool. I'm going to start the recording including choosing where it's saved and then I'm going to select my pen and continue with my reporting. Lets go ahead and do that now. I'm just going to choose to save this on my desktop currently, and I'm going to save it as Promethean recording. My recording's officially begun. Now I'll come over and select the Pen tool and I'll go ahead and proceed with my recording. When using Promethean Planet, it's important to double check to make sure that you're logged in.
If you're logged in, you'll then have full access to all of the resources where you can find and download various resources for your Promethean flipcharts. From Promethean Planet you can also access the Support menu where you can find drivers and software that go along with your Promethean board. Now that I'm finished recording, I need to go ahead and re click on the select tool and then head back over and stop my recording. Now, you probably noticed during that recording that I drew a circle around resources and then that circle went away as I drew a circle around support. All I did was use the keyboard shortcuts for undo. It's Cmd+Z on the Mac and Ctrl+Z on the PC.
That allows me to write and highlight in a certain area of the page, and then quickly remove those annotations before I scroll down a page or move on to the next section. I hope you enjoy using the built-in screen recorder inside of Promethean, and that this can be a great tool for helping get content out to your students.
