Promethean interactive whiteboards bring the immediacy of touch to your teaching. Learn the tools and best practices for using one in your classroom, in this course from author and educator Aaron Quigley. Aaron shows how to set up your Promethean board; download ActivInspire, the software that drives Promethean boards; and get started creating new presentations that include video, quizzes, and annotations. He'll also focus on teaching methods that get your students actively involved with the Promethean board, and offer challenges along the way to test their skills.
Before we get started creating interactive presentations with our Promethean board, there are two things that we need to download. One, we need to download the ActivInspire software. The software allows us to actually create the presentation. The second thing we need to download is known as a driver. The driver is going to allow our computer to communicate with the Promethean board. We can access both the ActivInspire software and the appropriate drivers directly from the Promethean Planet website. From the homepage of the Promethean Planet website, I'm going to go ahead and click on Support.
On the left-hand side of the screen where it says Browse Support, I'm going to come over and click on the Software dropdown menu. Under Software, let's go and select ActivInspire, since this is the application that allows us to create content for our Promethean board and also allows us to use the Promethean board as a digital whiteboard. Here, if you click the Download button for the ActivInspire software, it's going to automatically download the appropriate one, based on whatever computer system you're working on. For example, I'm currently on a Mac, so if I hit Download, it'll download the appropriate files to be installed on a Mac.
If you're on Windows, it'll download the appropriate .exe file so that you can install the ActivInspire software on your Windows environment. Directly to the right of the ActivInspire Download button are also listed the drivers available for the Promethean boards. Here, you need to select the appropriate driver based on the operating system of the computer you're using. If you're on a Mac, you can go ahead and select the ActivDriver Mac. If you're on a Windows, you need to know whether or not you're using a 32 or 64 bit operating system, and you need to download the appropriate driver.
Also if you're using Windows operating system, there's one additional driver you need to download, which is the ActivInspire handwriting recognition. The handwriting recognition is automatically included in the ActivInspire Mac version, and so Mac users do not have an additional thing to download. So once again, in order to follow along with this course, you need to download the ActivInspire software. And then come over, find your appropriate driver, and download that. And for our Windows users, you also need to download and install the ActivInspire Handwriting Recognition.
