Throughout a lesson, I often use a timer to make sure that my students are staying on track, and I'm also making sure I finish my class on time. Inside of ActivInspire, we have the ability to embed a variety of timers. We can add a timer just on the board that will be there regardless of what page we're viewing, and we can also embed timers directly into pages. Let's go and talk about how we can add these clocks and timers to our flip charts directly inside of ActivInspire? The first type of timer we can use will be projected on the board, regardless of what page is being displayed. This is also known as the ActivInspire clock.
To turn the clock on, we're going to go to Tools, followed by More Tools, and then select Clock. Here we have a clock that's displayed and I can position it anywhere I'd like on top of the page. If I create a new page, and I click between the pages, the clock stays in place. It is not page dependant, it's ActivInspire dependant. Even if I opened up a new flipchart, the clock would still be there. Now the clock has several options that we can configure. I can choose to have a digital clock. I can have the analog clock with no information, or I can have an analog clock that also shows the date and time.
I can also choose to turn this clock into a countup timer. The up-arrow for countup. Or a countdown timer, the down-arrow for countdown. So, for example, I might have this clock open so that students can see what's going on. And then maybe I'd like to say, you have exactly 5 minutes left in this particular project. I can click on the countdown timer. Type in a 5. If I'd like to, I can choose a sound to play. I can also have it perform a certain action at the very end. And then click OK. Now, one nice thing about the actions, is if this particular page contained a question.
I could have this timer advance to the next page, and the next question at the end of 5 minutes. This way if you're using your Promethean board to give a quiz, using the student response system. Your timer will actually determine when you move on to the next question. In addition to using this clock which is outside of the pages, I can also choose to embed various timers directly on the pages themselves. I do this by selecting the page I would like to embed the timer, and then I'm going to choose my Resource Browser. Under my Resource Browser, I'm going to open up Shared Resources. I'm going to come down to Lesson building tools, and click on Gadgets.
Here we have a variety of gadgets that I can embed directly on the page, including countdown timers. I'm going to grab this countdown timer, drag it over to the page, position it where I like it and then release it. I now have a countdown timer that's built directly into this page. So, if I come back to my Page view, I can see that as I go to my second page that timer's no longer there. In this page, I can quickly click the number of minutes students have and then click the play button. This timer we will now count down from 2 minutes and at the end of the 2 minute period the timer will stop. Unfortunately this timer does not have the ability to add in functions such as advancing to the next page or performing an action when the timer goes off.
Using the page timers in conjunction with the ActivInspired clock is a great way to make sure that your lesson always flows and that students have a clear understanding of the time expectations as you move throughout your class.
