Something important to keep in mind when you are just getting started with creating your own Actions is that it doesn't have to be the Action that ate Manhattan. It can be very a simple action; it could just be one step. What's nice is that you're able to take that one step and just click on it in the Action list over here, rather than having to remember where that command was in the menu. It's also something that you could share with other people. So it's a really good idea, when you're creating an Action for the first time, to just do something simple that you do a lot. Like, for example, as a graphic designer I send out a lot of proofs, and I like to add the watermark that says "Proof" or "Draft" or something like that on the page to my clients, because I don't want them to accidentally get it confused with the final version.

Creating new Actions

Something important to keep in mind when you are just getting started with creating your own Actions is that it doesn't have to be the Action that ate Manhattan. It can be very a simple action; it could just be one step. What's nice is that you're able to take that one step and just click on it in the Action list over here, rather than having to remember where that command was in the menu. It's also something that you could share with other people. So it's a really good idea, when you're creating an Action for the first time, to just do something simple that you do a lot. Like, for example, as a graphic designer I send out a lot of proofs, and I like to add the watermark that says "Proof" or "Draft" or something like that on the page to my clients, because I don't want them to accidentally get it confused with the final version.

So whenever they open it up in PDF, or they send out a PDF to somebody else, whoever gets it can see immediately that this is not the final version of the publication because it says "Proof" right there. So let's create a new Action that simply adds a proof watermark to the current document. So to start, I'm going to click Create New Action, and I have to decide on the three things that I need. First of all, what should I start with? Well, I want to start with A File Open in Acrobat. The idea being that I'm working on something in Acrobat on a PDF, I'm ready to send it to a client, and I just need to add the proof watermark.

So I'll have it opened already. So now I need to add steps from any of these panels on the left. I know that the Watermark command is part of the Pages section, so I twirl open pages. Now, not every single tool from the Tools panels are available yet here in this list, but luckily, Watermark (Add) and Watermark (Remove) are. So, that's good. I need Watermark (Add). Now, let me look at the options. So to configure this task--and here I'm presented with the actual dialog box as though I had chosen it from the Tools panel.

So I want to add the word "Draft", and I'll just leave it at Arial, and I want to rotate it 45 degrees. I think I'll make it a little larger than 50% of the page, maybe 75%. I want to reduce the opacity a bit. I wish that I had some page content to sort of preview, even some Lorem Ipsum, but it doesn't. Then I can also set the distance. Right now, it's right around the center, which is perfectly fine with me. I could click Appearance Options and choose when the watermark should appear: all the time, or only when it prints, and so on.

I'll just leave these at the default. But I just want to show you that the same kind of commands that you could set manually you can include inside of an Action. This looks good to me so I am just going to click OK. Now, if I wanted the user to be able to change that watermark, maybe to change what it says or change any of those things, I would turn on Prompt User. But actually, this is exactly the kind of watermark that I want added, and I don't want the person to have to worry about filling that out. So I am going to turn that off. I don't need any instruction step. So all I need to do is choose what to do now, where to save the document.

So Save to, I'll just leave it at Ask When Action is Started, and there is a little Option dialog box too, and I can choose some file naming. So the Output Options dialog box opens where I can choose some File Naming rules, such as to keep the original file name, or I could say, add to the original file name, maybe after it "wm" for watermarked. But I think I'll just keep the original file name. We want to save it as an Adobe PDF, and that's it! Click OK, and let's click Save.

Now, we need to enter the Action name. So I'll do Add "Draft" Watermark and then under the Action Description, "This adds a watermark for client proofs." I don't want to run this Action right after I save it. The Action name must be a valid file name. So let's go back to Save, and it doesn't like the quote marks. I did them in purpose to see if you are paying attention. There we go.

Add Draft Watermark. Now, let's give it a try. This adds a watermark for client proofs. Starts with the File > Open. It's going to add the watermark, don't show again for this Action. I can do that later. Now, it's done. It could have automatically added "wm" after that. Remember, if we wanted to. I'll go ahead, and do it myself, save this on to the Desktop, and it's done. There is Draft added to it. It didn't take that long to create that Action, but I think that over time, every time I click Add Draft Watermark, that's going to save me at least two, three minutes of time, and having to go to that dialog box on my own.
