By default, all Tables are created with Hairline Gray Gridlines and Alternating Row Colors, so you can easily follow your records and fields, but there may be times when you want to remove the Vertical Gridlines, the Horizontal Lines or the Alternating Colors. Right now I am in my Customers Table in Datasheet View. Look on the far right of the Home ribbon to a button called Gridlines, click on the dropdown arrow and I have four options. Right now I can see both, if I change it to Horizontal, that leaves just the horizontal lines, separating one record from another, this looks very nice and is very useful.
The third option, Vertical, may be useful if what's important to you is scanning your data field by field, up and down the columns. The last option, None, removes all of my gridlines. This can be hard to use though unless you do have Alternate Shading on. It is on by default, and that's what we can see colors in every other row. If I want to change the color of these alternating rows, here is the next button over. You can pick any color you'd like, but be sure not to use a dark color though, or it will be hard to read when you print.
If you want to turn off the Alternating Colors, go down to the bottom where it says No Color, but if I do that, you should at a minimum have on your Horizontal Gridlines. Customizing the Gridlines and the Shading of your table rows can help your users understand your data by helping their eye follow in the most practical direction.
