The drum track is part of the hidden chemistry of a great song. This is your beat making lab. Yeuda Ben-Atar, educator and producer who performs as DJ Side Brain, shows you how to make beats in a variety of genres, from dubstep to hip-hop. Yeuda works with Ableton Live—but you can use these tutorials to make beats in whatever DAW you have accessible.

First get some basic rhythmic theory, including counting music and note subdivisions, and learn how elements like cymbals, percussive instruments like congas, and even homemade sounds from cans, bottles, and counters contribute to your beats. The following chapters tackle the particulars of house, dubstep, drum and bass, trap, juke, and hip-hop. In each of these chapters, Yeuda discusses how to choose the appropriate tempo and drum sounds for the style and how to sequence the kick, snare, and cymbals. The course closes with some pro mixing techniques that balance punch and presence, so your drums will cut through the mix and sound their best.

Topics include:
  • How to count music
  • Using a piano roll editor
  • Choosing the right tempo and samples for various genres
  • Sequencing your drum elements
  • How to program house, dubstep, drum and bass, trap, juke, and hip-hop beats
  • Adding extra percussion sounds
  • Adding breaks
  • How to mix your beat for presence and punch
  • Adjusting levels and panning
  • Adding reverb to your beat

Welcome

Yueda Ben-Atar: Hey, my name is Yeuda Ben-Atar, also known as Side Brain. I'm an educator, performer, and producer, and I'm very excited to welcome you to Programming Beats in Ableton Live. In this course, I'll show you how to make beats in a variety of musical genres. I'll start by giving you an overview of rhythmic theory, and show you how to count music. Understand note divisions, and time signatures. Then I'll show you how to use the Piano Roll or MIDI Editor. And I'll give you a rundown of the different types of drum sounds we'll be using. I'll be sharing with you techniques for creating the fundamental rhythmic patterns and choosing the sounds, Full house, Dubstep, Drum and Base, Juke, Rap and Hip Hop. I'll talk about each genre from a conceptual point of view, and discuss what makes them sound the way they sound.

Then I'll show you how to actually make all of these beats using Ableton Live. Although, you'll be able to use these techniques in your software or hardware of choice. Finally, I'll walk you through some professional mixing techniques to help you create the right balance of punch and presence so your drums will cut through the mix. So, if you are ready to make some beats. Let's get started with Programming Beats in Ableton Live.
