In 3ds Max 2011 Essential Training, author Aaron F. Ross demonstrates how to use this top-tier application for digital content creation, widely used in diverse industries such as architecture, industrial design, motion pictures, games and virtual worlds. This course covers modeling with polygons, curves, and subdivision surfaces, defining surface properties with materials and maps, setting up cameras and lights, animating objects, and final output rendering. This model is going to be bilaterally symmetrical, meaning that it's left and right sides will be mirror images of one another. Because of that fact, I will save a lot of time if I just model one-half of the model, and then just mirror the other side. So the way to achieve this is to use a symmetry modifier, and it works best if you just delete half of the model and then apply the symmetry. So that's what I will do now. I will go into my Polygon Sub- object mode and from the front view, I am going to delete the left side polygons, just drag a box to select all of those.
I will orbit around the perspective and make sure that I have selected what I want to select and then just press the Delete key on the keyboard, and I have deleted half the model, very good. Then I will exit out of Sub-object mode and apply the symmetry modifier, scrolling down, looking for symmetry. There we go. Now, if I deleted the other side, I might need to use this Flip option. Just be aware that 3ds Max anticipates that you are going to delete the side of the model which is in the negative X direction, and if I deleted the other side, I might have to use this Flip option.
So if I deleted the other side, this is what I would see, and I would need to play around with this Flip switch. Okay, now I have got the symmetry applied, I just want to illustrate to you that although this just looks as it was before as a box, there is more going on here. If I go into my Editable Poly and turn on Show End Result and select a Sub-object like a Point here, if I move that around, you will see the other side is updating automatically, very cool. So I have got my symmetry working, and I am going to exit out of Sub-object mode, and the next thing I am going to do is I am going to actually use TurboSmooth.
