In this exercise, when I actually animate this, I'm not going to be deforming it, but if I did want to deform this object, I would need to adjust some of those parameters in order to get a decent shape that would deform properly. Specifically, this Cap Type, the options are Morph and Grid. I would want it to be a Grid Cap Type in order to create a nice even grid across this front surface. But I can't see it right now. If I just turn on Grid, apparently nothing happened.
So this is just a case of you kind of have to know what you're looking for. In order to see the effect of this change in the Cap Type, I'm going to have to go under the Object Properties and enable Triangle Edges, so we can see them. So as you saw before, we can go to Object Properties with the right-click quad menu, but I can also go up into the Edit menu and go to Object Properties down at the bottom of the Edit menu. What I'm looking for here is Edges Only, so I want to see triangle edges and they're currently being hidden.
So, this is a bit of the voodoo of this program. There are hidden edges, and there are visible edges. Currently, we're only able to see the "visible edges". But that's not good enough for me to know what the real structure of the model is. So, I need to see these so-called invisible edges and the way to do that is to turn off this "Edges Only" switch. So when that's off and I click OK, now we can see the grid. So, these edges are important for the purposes of deforming the surface of the object.
If we have Morph as our Type, you'll see we're getting these triangles and this is just not going to deform terribly well. So I'm going to choose Grid. So that's how I can display triangle edges with Object Properties, so I can see what I'm really getting in 3ds Max.
