In 3ds Max 2011 Essential Training, author Aaron F. Ross demonstrates how to use this top-tier application for digital content creation, widely used in diverse industries such as architecture, industrial design, motion pictures, games and virtual worlds. This course covers modeling with polygons, curves, and subdivision surfaces, defining surface properties with materials and maps, setting up cameras and lights, animating objects, and final output rendering. Exercise files accompany the course.
When you first launch a fresh install of 3ds Max, you will see the default user interface, and this is a very dark user interface. It's not my preference. I actually prefer to have a lighter user interface. I think that that is more conducive to teaching as well. So what I would like you to do is actually to change the user interface. You can do that by going to the Customize menu. It's very easy. All you have to do is go to Custom UI and Defaults Switcher, activate that, and you will get the pop-up dialog.
This dialog serves two functions. On the left you can change the tool options. So, for example, depending on what industry you are working on, you might choose a different tool option. So for people working in media and entertainment, generally, usually you will just use the default Max settings. If you are an architect, you might choose the DesignVIZ.mentalray setting. For this course, we will leave it at just the standard generic Max setting. But over here on the right is the other half of this dialog, which is where we get to choose a different user interface scheme.
I am strongly recommending that you choose the ame-light interface. We are seeing a preview of what that interface is going to look like. I think it's just clearer because we can see the icons a little bit better. So once I click Set here, I get a pop- up dialog that warns me that the default settings will fully take effect the next time you restart. So I will need to click OK. I will actually want to close the program and relaunch it. Now you will see we have got the ame-light interface loaded. This is going to be a little bit easier for us to see and to manipulate the interface.
