In 3ds Max 2011 Essential Training, author Aaron F. Ross demonstrates how to use this top-tier application for digital content creation, widely used in diverse industries such as architecture, industrial design, motion pictures, games and virtual worlds. Moving on to adjust the level of detail for my Bevel object, I can play around with the number of segments here and increase the level of detail in the depth of the object. But I don't have any controls within the Bevel to add more segments along the outline of the text. So, what I need to do here is I need to go into the spline object and adjust its Interpolation settings. This is valid for any spline object or any shape, whether it's a circle or text or edible spline.
So in this case, I'm going to go to the Text object and you'll see I've got the Interpolation rollout open here. We've got the number of steps. What this actually translates into at the end of the day is the number of polygon edges between two points on an individual spline. So, between two points on the spline there are actually sub-segments, and this is where I get to control the number of sub-segments. So, as I increase this, you will see especially in the curved areas it's starting to give me more detail.
So, let me orbit around here, so you can see this little bit more clearly. So, fewer steps result in less detail, and a greater number of steps give me more detail. The default is 6. You'll also notice that in flat areas we're not getting any divisions. There are no sub-steps. That's because the Optimize option is enabled. So if I turn that off, then 3ds Max is not going to discard those sub-segments in this linear segment of the spline.
So, in other words, if it's off, we're going to get the number of steps that we asked for. If it's on, 3ds Max is going to throw those steps away if it detects that this is a straight line. So, if I was going to deform this, I would probably want Optimize turned off, so that I would get some detail to work with here. Additionally, you'll see there's an Adaptive option. If you turn that on, then 3ds Max takes total control over this interpolation, and it will add the number of segments that it thinks it needs. But you don't have any control over how that works.
So I don't advise it, in fact. I always prefer to have Adaptive turn off and set my number of steps manually. So, now we've got pretty decent detail on this by adjusting the Bevel parameters and also by setting the spline interpolation values in the Text object.
