Anticipation

Anticipation is something that happens quite a bit with characters, but also can be used in non-character animation. Anticipation anticipates a move by moving an object slightly in the opposite direction, before the main motion. A good example would be a catapult. The catapult is pulled back before it throws a projectile forward. Pulling back stores more energy that is released quickly. This also happens with characters. A character will crouch down before jumping. This stretches the leg muscles so they can tighten up to give the jump more energy. Anticipation does not need to be limited to these types of objects. It can be used in any type of animation. So, an object that moves to the right, may do a quick move to the left beforehand. This can add a bit more life to the animation. Another way to use anticipation is to direct the audience's attention. When an object anticipates, it is the same as saying, look over here.
